Jeffrey Epstein attempted to ingratiate himself with Donald Trump and Elon Musk's inner circle during the 2016 presidential election. Epstein, reportedly arranged meetings between influential Trump supporters Peter Thiel, Thomas Barrack and Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin.
In 2024, a California woman, referred to as Jane Doe 200 in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court, testified that the during their time together, Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, hinted that Epstein was an agent for Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency—similar to Maxwell’s father, Robert. Maxwell allegedly warned Doe, saying, “It’s not good to be Epstein’s enemy.”
Jeffrey Epstein has been reported to have bragged about flying to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin, and about his links to prominent Israelis and Saudis, all of whom have since backed Trump. Steve Bannon, a close Trump ally, reportedly made friends with Jeffrey Epstein in 2017 because he believed he was a spy and was interested in his alleged role as a middleman between intelligence services in the US and around the world.
The Jane Doe 200 lawsuit, further states, “Epstein was not only extremely wealthy but suspiciously well-connected, even more so than the other powerful men he associated with.” Despite spending considerable time together in a committed relationship, Doe says Epstein’s work remained unclear.
Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are longtime business partners, tech billionaires and friends. Both are deeply involved in efforts to influence U.S. politics, particularly through their backing of Donald Trump. Musk, who co-founded PayPal with Thiel, has hosted secret meetings, along with investor David Sacks, to strategize their political goals. Musk has used his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to amplify anti-Biden, anti-Kamala and pro-Trump rhetoric and has publicly backed the Trump campaign speaking at a 2024 Trump rally. Thiel, a strong supporter of Trump in 2016, did not endorse him in the 2020 election, but he has financially backed Trump-aligned candidates like J.D. Vance and Blake Masters.
Thiel's anti-democratic sentiments, including his statement that "freedom and democracy are no longer compatible," align with with Thiel and Musk's growing support for authoritarianism. Their influence is not only political but also driven by business interests, with both using their power to tilt the scales toward policies and leaders that favor their financial and ideological goals.
Thomas Barrack, who spoke at Trump’s 2016 nominating convention and praised Trump’s character, was acquitted in November 2022 of charges related to acting as an unregistered agent for the United Arab Emirates.
