Elon Musk’s America PAC has ended the million-dollar giveaways to voters after a threat from the Department of Justice.

Musk had recently begun giving away $1 million each day until the November election to registered swing state voters who sign his petition supporting the U.S. Constitution.

Voters did not need to commit to voting for Donald Trump to be able to sign the petition and enter for their chance to win.

“The only thing we ask for the million dollars is that you be a spokesperson for the petition, and that’s it, really,” Musk said of the giveaway.

However, the Justice Department warned that giving millions of dollars to regular American citizens may be a violation of federal law.

Pennsylvania’s Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro had also urged an investigation into the giveaway.

“Musk obviously has a right to be able to express his views. He’s made it very, very clear that he supports Donald Trump. I don’t. Obviously, we have a difference of opinion,” Shapiro told Meet the Press’s Kristen Welker.

“But when you start flowing this kind of money into politics, I think it raises serious questions,” he added. “That is deeply concerning. … It’s something that law enforcement could take a look at.”

Since the warning from the DOJ, the prizes appear to have come to a halt.

Trudeau’s Liberal government was getting torched for planning to give entry to 500,000 new permanent residents into the country in each of the next two years.

Next year’s target will now ‘only’ be 395,000 new permanent residents – and furthermore, the numbers will diminish to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.

44-year-old Polanski was arrested and charged with ‘rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, providing controlled substances to a minor and lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14’.

After fleeing the US, the director became a fugitive, first living in London and then settling in France.

Now it arises that Roman Polanski settled a lawsuit over an alleged sexual assault of a minor – a different one – that took place more than 50 years ago.

With this settlement, the Oscar-winning director escapes a 10-day trial in the US.

Parents in the eastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia have pulled their children from class after a “non-binary” male drag performer gave a compulsory presentation on “gender identity” to kids as young as 12.

On October 18, a number of parents at Oyster Pond Academy kept their children home from school after learning that a “non-binary” drag performer called Teo Ferguson had given their children a “gender identity” presentation that students were not allowed to opt out of.

“It went above and beyond what should be taught in the classroom,” Hollie Riggs, a parent with children at the school, told CTV News.

The presentation covered sexual identity, “gender diversity,” and relationships. Ferguson revealed to the Daily Mail that he also taught children how queer-identifying people might express their gender.

Riggs revealed that she first learned about the presentation on social media, prompting her decision to pull her child from class.

“I wanted to have to avoid them having that conversation with their peers after school, to avoid that communication, so I can have it at home,” she explained.

“It was the fact that how much of it was discussed and what the kids had access to after the meeting,” Riggs continued, referring to Ferguson’s inappropriate social media accounts which were shared with students at the presentation.

Following the presentation, Ferguson declared that he did not share his social media accounts, full of pictures of him dressed like a stripper, but rather a teacher gave them to the students.

“The reality is a teacher was really excited initially to see me in their classroom talking about gender, identity, and sexual orientation from grade 7-9,” he originally wrote in a Facebook post.

“Now grades 7 to 8 did not hear about my social media, but in grade 9 they did due to a teacher’s excitement,” he continued. Continue…

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has rejected a visit to his country by Antonio Guterres after the UN secretary-general attended the BRICS Summit in Russia this week, AFP reported on Friday, citing sources.

Leaders from around the world gathered in Kazan this week for the 16th BRICS Summit. The UN chief’s spokesperson told reporters that the meeting was “of great importance” for the work of the United Nations, with the BRICS countries representing nearly half of the world’s population. It is “standard practice” for the secretary-general to attend “meetings of organizations with significant numbers of important member states,” such as the G7 and G20, the spokesman stated.

A high-ranking source in the Ukrainian presidency told AFP that the UN chief’s Russia trip had triggered fury in Kiev. The unnamed source told the outlet that “after Kazan, (Guterres) wanted to come to Ukraine, but (Zelensky) did not confirm his visit.”

“So Guterres won’t be here, specifically because of the humiliation of sanity and international law in Kazan,” the source said.

Guterres, who visited Russia for the first time in over two years, held several bilateral meetings with the leaders attending the event. At least four people, including two soldiers and two civilians, have been killed after militants sprayed bullets at an Indian army vehicle in the Jammu and Kashmir region bordering Pakistan. Three other soldiers sustained injuries, Indian media reported on Friday.

The People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-E-Mohammed, has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place near the resort town of Gulmarg, according to reports. Notably, the group orchestrated a suicide bombing in Kashmir’s Pulwama region in 2019 which killed 40 Indian army personnel and further strained ties between the two South Asian neighbors.

“A massive search operation has been launched against the militants responsible for the attack,” an army official, who was not named, told Reuters. The official said that additional reinforcements have been sent to the area. India’s army deployed drones and helicopters to scan the area where the attack occurred, reports stated.

Today, the United States, Canada and Mexico released an updated set of guidelines the North American nations will follow in the event of a public health emergency or pandemic, called the “North American Preparedness for Animal and Human Pandemics Initiative” (NAPAHPI).

The declaration “fulfills commitments made during the 2021 and 2023 North American Leaders’ Summits to strengthen North America’s regional health security by working together to mitigate and respond to public health threats,” the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a press release. “It also provides a flexible framework that will help North American partners collaborate to address the challenges of potential future pandemics or other public health threats that require a coordinated response.”

The United States is committed to strengthening health security and preparing for future threats. To be successful, we must coordinate closely across governments, as well as with industry and community leaders – which is what this platform makes possible. Our nations cannot be strong unless they are healthy. That’s why we will continue to work together on a sustained, durable strategy that improves health security for all.

Brampton requests gov support to tackle international student human trafficking

The City of Brampton is asking the provincial and federal government to support the city’s efforts to tackle human trafficking involving international students.

Brampton City Council approved a motion from the city’s Community Services Chair Rowena Santos, which advocated for “systemic change” at the provincial and federal levels to protect Brampton’s international student population from the threat of being exploited or human trafficked.

“Many (international students) face financial challenges, housing insecurity and a lack of adequate institutional support, making them prime targets for exploitation and trafficking,” a city news release said. “In particular, female students have been exploited by predatory landlords and traffickers, leading to cases of unwanted pregnancies, mental health crises and even suicide.”

In order to tackle the human trafficking problem, the motion recommends that the government raise the amount of hours international students are allowed to work in a week, remove deportation conditions for anyone connected to prostitution, and expand access to social services for international students.

Santos said that due to international students only being able to work 24 hours a week while studying here, many of them face financial difficulties which pushes them towards sex work.

Individual international students are required to prove that in addition to their tuition, they have access to at least $10,000 per year of their study and $833 per month to support themselves before being approved to study in Canada.

Due to immigration rules, any international student found to be involved in sex trafficking, even if forced, can be deported. Santos claimed that many instances of human trafficking go unreported by international students as there are no protections guaranteed for victims of the crime who want to report it. Continue…

Canadians receiving EI benefits continues upward trajectory: StatsCan

The number of Canadians receiving Employment Insurance increased again in August by 1.5%, with an additional 7,400 people accessing the benefit and marking the third increase in recipients in four consecutive months.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest report on Employment Insurance, prior to this consistent increase, the numbers of Canadians receiving EI had held relatively steady from September 2023 to April 2024.

The number of EI beneficiaries has increased by 26,000 on a year-over-year basis, up 5.6% in August.

Additionally, Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey revealed that “in the four months to August, the unemployment rate increased 0.5 percentage points to 6.6%, as more people searched for work, while overall employment was little changed.”

“Compared with August 2023, the unemployment rate was up 1.1 percentage points and the number of unemployed people who had been laid off increased to 728,000 (+14.8%; +94,000) (not seasonally adjusted),” reads the survey.

That number of regular EI beneficiaries rose for men in all age groups in August, led by the cohort of core-aged men between 25 to 54. Continue…

Most parents are left confused by a year-old change to how grades are represented on report cards in British Columbia.

In September 2023, the BC NDP government switched report cards for students in Kindergarten to Grade 9 from A to F letter grades to the “descriptive terms” “emerging” “developing,” “proficient,” and “extending.”

To gauge the success of this change, the Fraser Institute commissioned Leger 360 to conduct a poll asking parents what their thoughts were on the two grading forms and tested their knowledge of both.

According to the Leger survey, most Canadians, including parents in the province where it’s been implemented for over a year, cannot identify what B.C.’s new “descriptive grading” terms mean when gauging how well their children are doing in school.

Leger surveyed 1,200 Canadians; one thousand were conducted with a representative sampling of parents across Canada, and another 100 were conducted in Alberta and British Columbia. The survey occurred between March 25 and April 8, 2024, and June 27 and July 8, 2024.

Though a non-probability survey reports no margin of error, for comparative purposes, a probability sampling of this size would have a margin of error of around 2.8%, 19 times out of 20 for the first interviews, and 3.7%, 19 times out of 20 for the second interviews. Continue…

A new poll has found that the majority of Canadians if they could vote in the upcoming US election would cast their ballot for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, and that Canadians believe Harris winning the presidency would be the best outcome for Canada.

The Leger poll, conducted for the Canadian Press, found that 64 percent of Canadian adults said they would vote for Harris if they could, while 21 percent said they would vote for GOP nominee Donald Trump. An additional 15 percent were unsure.

When asked what the best outcome for Canada in the US election would be, 62 percent said a Harris victory, while 20 percent said a Trump victory and 18 percent were unsure.

65 percent of Canadians said they were very or somewhat worried about violence and uncertainty related to the outcome of the US election. 37 percent of Canadians also said that Trump winning the election would make them less likely to travel to the US, while 44 percent said it would not change their travel plans.

Canadians said that Harris would do a better job than Trump on issues polled, including addressing climate change (68 to 14 percent), trade relations with Canada (64 to 18 percent), and immigration (58 to 28 percent).

The poll was conducted between October 18 and 21 of 1,562 Canadian adults and has a margin of error of 2.48 percent.

Overall, 70 percent of Canadians said they were very or somewhat interested in the US election. 42 percent of Canadians said they wouldn’t be watching election night coverage but instead catch up afterwards, while 38 percent said they would be watching live.
