As a result, fossil fuels – including natural gas and coal – have had an average share of 62.4% of total electricity output in the United States since June. This compares to a lower fossil fuel share in the coal-dominated power system in China, where fossil fuels accounted for 60.5% of generation between June and September, according to data from energy think tank Ember reported by Reuters columnist Gavin Maguire.

The Dali collided with one of the columns of the Francis Scott Key bridge in March, after the ship suffered mechanical issues, which caused the bridge to collapse and kill six workers.

The incident forced Baltimore to close its port and federal channel for months, which slowed commercial shipping traffic that flowed through Maryland's largest city.

As The Epoch Times' Caden Pearson reports, the DOJ announced the settlement with Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine, the owners and operators of the Motor Vessel Dali, on Oct. 24.

The deal resolves a portion of the legal dispute that began in September when the DOJ sued the companies for damages linked to the federal government’s response to the incident.

The $101.9 million settlement will cover the federal government’s costs for cleaning up the wreckage and reopening the port. However, it does not address the cost of rebuilding the bridge itself, which the state of Maryland is pursuing in a separate claim. Continue…

Lebanon has accused Israel of committing a war crime after a group of journalists in south Lebanon came under attack by Israeli warplanes. Three journalists were killed during an air raid on a hotel or guesthouse in Hasbaya, about 50km south of Beirut and near the Syrian border.

BBC is reporting that "The attack was carried out on a guesthouse in a compound in Hasbaya being used by more than a dozen journalists from at least seven media organizations - with a courtyard containing cars clearly marked with 'press'.

The three slain journalists worked for regional broadcasters Al-Manar TV and Al Mayadeen TV, which confirmed the deaths in statements, identifying the deceased as Ghassan Najjar, Mohammad Reda, and Wissam Qassem.

While Israel did not offer immediate comment, it might rationalize or seek to justify the killings given that Al-Manar is a Hezbollah-run news network, and Al Mayadeen is seen as pro-Iran.

But Lebanon’s Information Minister Ziad Makary charged that this was an intentional assassination of journalists.

"The Israeli enemy waited for the journalists’ nighttime break to betray them in their sleep… This is an assassination, after monitoring and tracking, with prior planning and design, as there were 18 journalists there representing seven media institutions. Today in Canada, it is common to hear that truth and reconciliation are necessary to mend indigenous-non-indigenous relations. Unfortunately, the notion of objective truth is being replaced by subjective beliefs, and attempts at reconciliation quite often result in discord and misinformation.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Powell River, a picturesque coastal city on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Powell River was once lauded as a model of collaboration between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people. Now, it is the scene of a divisive fight over changing the name of the city.

A name change for Powell River was tentatively proposed in May 2021 by the local Tla’amin Nation as an effort to further reconciliation in the area. At the time, city officials said they were skeptical. A month later, after allegations surfaced about the “remains of 215 children” buried at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, the name change demand became more dogmatic. “The prospect of changing the name must not be a matter of ‘if’, but a matter of ‘when’”, stated Tla-main chief (or ‘Hegus’) John Hackett in June 2021.

Hackett argued that the town’s current name had to go because of the legacy of its supposed namesake, Israel Wood Powell. From 1872 to 1889, Powell was the federal superintendent of B.C.’s Indian Affairs. As such, he stands accused of being “instrumental” in the creation of residential schools in the province and for outlawing the potlatch, a native gift-giving ceremony. The only legacy media willing to challenge these announcements, albeit timidly, has been the National Post.

Nova Scotia provincial tax cut follows taxpayer group’s advocacy, earning applause

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston’s decision to reduce the provincial harmonized sales tax by 1% has resulted in applause from a taxpayer advocacy group.

Devin Drover, general counsel and Atlantic director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation told True North that the tax cut follows 14 years of the HST being at 15% after the former NDP government hiked it from 13% to 15%, which the successive Liberal government did not touch.

The federal portion of the HST is 5%, and the provincial portion is currently 10%, set to drop to 9% on Apr. 1, 2025.

“We are very pleased to see action from Premier Houston on cutting the HST by one percentage point, which will save the average Nova Scotian over $350 per year,” said Drover.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation had called for a tax cut in its pre-budget proposal, part of a broader set of recommendations to reduce tax burdens for Nova Scotians. Continue…
