China's Coal Production Surged in September

Coal production in China rose by 4.4% in the year last month to a total 414.46 million tons, government data showed.

The production rate also rose on the month: the August total stood at 396.55 million tons.

The increase followed the end of safety inspections in coal-producing regions and the return of coal-to-chemicals capacity to normal operation after maintenance, Reuters reported.

US charges former Indian spy over plot to kill Sikh separatist

The name of an Indian agent has been revealed 11 months after a court cited evidence of New Delhi’s involvement

US federal prosecutors have named a former Indian intelligence operative believed to be involved in an assassination attempt on a New York-based lawyer and Sikh separatist leader, designated a “terrorist” by New Delhi.

The plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was foiled by FBI agents in June last year, according to US court documents. US prosecutors have charged the suspect – Vikram Kumar Yadav – with “murder-for-hire and money laundering.”

Initially, the indictment did not name the agent, instead referring to him as ‘CC-1.’ The Indian national has been accused of colluding with Nikhil Gupta, a New Delhi businessman who was arrested in the Czech Republic and later extradited to the US.

The FBI said a “federal arrest warrant was issued for Yadav in the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.”

According to the FBI, Yadav provided information including the victim’s residential addresses, phone numbers, and other identifying information, to his co-conspirator. Continue…

Approximately 100 Canadians are currently imprisoned in China, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, despite assurances from the Chinese Embassy that Canadian visitors have little reason to fear arbitrary arrest.

Blacklock's Reporter says the update comes amid ongoing concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals in China.

“At any given time, approximately 100 Canadians are detained in China on a broad range of offences,” stated a June 17 briefing book for the deputy foreign minister.

These offences range from minor infractions like immigration violations to serious charges such as drug trafficking and fraud. “These figures are subject to change,” the briefing noted.

The identities of the detained Canadians have not been disclosed, with the Department of Foreign Affairs citing the Privacy Act as the reason for withholding individual case details.

The issue of Canadians detained abroad remains a point of concern for the Canadian government. A separate 2023 report tabled in Parliament revealed that 910 Canadians are imprisoned in foreign countries, with the largest number — 557 — held in U.S. prisons. This is followed by 28 Canadians in Australia, 24 in Japan, 16 in the United Kingdom, and smaller numbers in countries like Turkey, Mexico, and Vietnam.
