Florida mother sues AI company over allegedly causing death of teen son

Megan Garcia says Character.AI targeted her son, Sewell Setzer, with 'anthropomorphic, hypersexualized, and frighteningly realistic experiences'

A Florida mother is suing the artificial intelligence company Character.AI for allegedly causing the suicide of her 14-year-old son. The mother filed a lawsuit against the company claiming her son was addicted to the company’s service and the chatbot created by it.

Megan Garcia says Character.AI targeted her son, Sewell Setzer, with "anthropomorphic, hypersexualized, and frighteningly realistic experiences". Setzer began having conversations with various chatbots on Character.AI starting in April 2023, according to the lawsuit. The conversations were often text-based romantic and sexual interactions.

Garcia claims in the lawsuit that the chatbot "misrepresented itself as a real person, a licensed psychotherapist, and an adult lover, ultimately resulting in Sewell's desire to no longer live outside" of the world created by the service.

The lawsuit also said he became "noticeably withdrawn, spent more and more time alone in his bedroom, and began suffering from low self-esteem." He became more attached to one bot, in particular "Daenerys," based on a character in "Game of Thrones."

Setzer expressed thoughts of suicide and the chatbot repeatedly brought it up. Setzer eventually died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in February after the company’s chatbot allegedly repeatedly encouraged him to do so.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our users and want to express our deepest condolences to the family," Character.AI said in a statement.

Character.AI has since added a self-harm resource to its platform and new safety measures for users under the age of 18.

Character.AI told CBS news users are able to edit the bot's responses and that Setzer did in some of the messages.

"Our investigation confirmed that, in a number of instances, the user rewrote the responses of the Character to make them explicit. In short, the most sexually graphic responses were not originated by the Character, and were instead written by the user," Jerry Ruoti, head of trust & safety at Character.AI told CBS News.

Moving forward, Character.AI said the new safety features will include pop-ups with disclaimers that AI is not a real person and directing users to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline when suicidal ideations are brought up.

Republicans' Early Voting Lead in Nevada 'Unheard Of'

Updated Oct 24, 2024 at 10:52 AM EDT

By James Bickerton

Nearly 20,000 more registered Republicans have voted in Nevada thus far in the presidential election than registered Democrats, according to data released on Wednesday, which one local politics expert described as"unheard of at this point in any other presidential cycle."(Kash was running a sign up the vote in NV)

According to figures from the Nevada Secretary of State's office, shared on X by Decision Desk data analyst Michael Pruser,159,388 registered Republicans had voted in the Silver State as of Wednesday evening, well ahead of the 140,878 Democrats and 97,529 voters with a different or no party affiliation.

The early results in the key swing state come as a blow to the Democrats, who have historically performed well with early and mail in voters. Recent surveys suggest the race remains too close, with election website FiveThirtyEight, which analyzes survey data, giving Trump a 51 percent chance of victory in November versus 49 percent for Harris.

Jon Ralston, editor of The Nevada Independent, described the results as "unheard of at this point in any other presidential cycle" on X, and said there is "no good news" in the figures for Democratsin a blogpost on his website.

He wrote: "I now feel like I am in the upside-down world. In past cycles, I would be telling you how the Dems were slowly building a firewall in Clark (tens of thousands more ballots than Republicans). They have successfully done this in every presidential election since 2008.

"But the opposite is happening: Thanks to a rural tsunami, the GOP has moved out to a substantial ballot lead."Clark County is by some margin the most populous in the state containing Las Vegas, where the Democrats have traditionally performed best.

Ralston added that even if a majority of the 97,529 voters without major party affiliation back Harris, it still could leave Trump with an overall lead.

He said: "There are about 100,000 non-major party voters in the mix, or 12 percent of their total—that's substantially lower than the turnout by both major parties and part of the reason I think we should discount most Nevada polls. No one knows how they will break, although Dems are optimistic because they skew young.

"But even if Kamala Harris has a 10-point lead among indies in the current makeup of the electorate, if Trump is holding his base, he is ahead by 6,000 votes or so. Not a lot, but a lead nevertheless."

Florida Early Voting Turnout Update - 10.24

Let's take a quick look at Florida's current turnout.

🔴Republicans - 1,226,213

🔵Democrats - 1,023,418

🟡Others - 568,294

With the start of early voting, Republicans have netted about ~100,000 votes a day. Six additional rural counties will open today, likely keeping that trend going.

Hillsborough and Miami-Dade County are expected to flip Republican before the end of the day (and likely stay Republican throughout.. Tomorrow, we'll see the same map we'll see after the election—sixty red counties by party turnout and seven blue.

Today is also the LAST DAY to request a mail ballot in the state; if you want one, you must do it now.

MAGA REMINDER

There are 11 battleground states in our opinion.

AZ, NM, NV, MN, MI, WI, NC, GA, PA, VA and NH.

Trump only has to win Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.

He can lose all the other 8 swing states and he will still WIN.
