Op-ed: Hundreds of thousands of migrants are being held in southern Mexico until US Election Day — and are eager to rush border

A group of 2,000 migrants in southern Mexico depart for the US weeks before election — worried about potential new administration

The caravan departed from Tapachula — one of Mexico’s southernmost cities on the border with Guatemala – on Sunday, and began the nearly 2,000-mile trek to the US with men, women, and children from across Latin America.

Many of the migrants fear that whomever is voted into the White House on November 5 could end the asylum program completely. As a result, they believe that the next few months until a new president is sworn in on Jan. 20 will be the last chance to cross the border.

‘I Love Kamala’: Migrants Fear Trump Victory As Caravan Heads To US

Numerous migrants that are part of a massive caravan headed for the U.S.-Mexico border expressed fear of a Republican presidential victory, believing that former President Donald Trump would not let them into the country if he returns to the White House.

U.S.-bound migrants stationed in the southwestern Mexican city of Tapachula, instead, expressed their admiration for Vice President Kamala Harris and pray she wins on Election Day, according to the Center for Immigration Studies’ Todd Bensman. The migrants’ responses come as Americans head to the polls on Nov. 5, the results of which could dramatically change how the country conducts immigration enforcement.
