BV Triple-A here

For the last few months a certain link shortener has been posted

If these posts get reposted to >>>/qnotables/, these link shorteners are now resolved into the actual URL, for both security, but also so that the actual URLs are saved and not some link shortener, which may either block these special URLs, or go down entirely.

Existing posts were also changed accordingly.

See for example >>>/qnotables/246807

I'm archiving onto wayback machine normally, have been doing that since mid 2020.

Originally I archived to archive-today as well, but they added a captcha.

Jim has blocked basically every other link shortener.

Link shortener means you surf to a URL, and that forwards you to somewhere, but you don't know to which location. That's really bad, don't you think?

It could be used easily to hack anons on here.

And of course it can and is used for tracking users (at least the site is tracking), which is really bad especially on here.

Why would anyone use a link shortener instead of a direct link?

When I reposted the notables of years ago, I had several posts that used link shorteners, which were blocked in the mean time by Jim, so I couldn't even post the original post anymore.

And for some the link shortener even had forgotten the target link, others even were offline. Therefore I had to search and figure out where it pointed to.

So for archiving it's also terrible.

It seems it's just one anon who is doing that for whatever reason, and it doesn't seem that he wants to stop.

I don't really care anymore, because it's fixed when such links are posted and made notable.
