Rule's biggest solo role to date has been as chairwoman of NATO's welcome committee. Along with Gov. Pat Quinn, Rule led an Illinois delegation in Brussels, where they introduced Chicago to NATO officials. She sold the charms of the city in her first public address.
"Chicago's a perfect match for a NATO summit, and we so thank you for the opportunity to share our city with the world," Rule said. "Our greatest treasure is our people. We have a wonderfully diverse population in many distinct neighborhoods throughout the city. My husband likes to call Chicago 'the most American of American cities.'"
While she was serving as an ambassador for the city, Emanuel spent time with the kids on a spring break ski trip in Park City, Utah.
When world leaders arrived in Chicago in May, Rule hosted a brunch for their spouses at the Chicago History Museum.
