Doomsday Arctic seed vault gets deposit of 30,000 new samples

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - An Arctic seed vault on Norway's Spitsbergen island has received new samples from the largest number of depositors since 2020, reflecting fear about the threat of conflict and climate change to food security, a custodian of the facility said on Wednesday.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway has received its largest number of new seed samples since 2020, highlighting concerns over conflicts and climate change impacting food security.

Since its establishment in 2008, the vault has served as a backup for global gene banks and helped restore seed collections damaged by the Syrian war.

Executive Director Stefan Schmitz noted that "Climate change and conflict threaten infrastructure and impact food security for over 700 million people in more than 75 countries worldwide."

Recent deposits include Bolivia's first contribution from local farming families and 1,145 samples from Chad, featuring crops vital for adapting to climate change.

In total, over 30,000 new samples from 21 countries have been added, with the vault opening only a few times a year to maintain security.
