A founder of the hip-hop label Death Row Records who spent 33 years in prison on drug charges before Donald Trump granted him clemency in 2021 endorsed the former president’s campaign Monday, saying he had concluded that Trump would do more lift up the economic situation of his community.

Michael “Harry O” Harris, who remade himself as a social activist in prison and now runs a group focused on Black economic empowerment, has been helping to organize hip-hop concerts in swing states to increase public awareness of the coming election. He released a policy agenda this month, with a request for both major party candidates to engage with him.
Days later, Trump praised Harris’s efforts with his nonprofit Our Community First Action in an Oct. 11 post on Truth Social: “Michael Harris (Harry O) is working hard to support and build on what my administration did for Black Americans in the first term,” Trump wrote. “Working together, we will Make America Great Again for everyone.”
Harris said he has not heard from the Kamala Harris campaign.
“Donald Trump has recently committed to supporting Community First if he is back in the White House,” Michael Harris said about his endorsement. “The Community First Action group supports President Trump based on him saying that he will be committed to working with that organization once he is in office.”

Harris was convicted in federal court of running a nationwide cocaine trafficking network from Los Angeles that made millions of dollars in the 1980s. He helped found Godfather Entertainment, the parent company of Death Row Records, as well as the label itself, which became the home of artists Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and other pioneers of West Coast rap. He currently serves as chief operating officer of the newly formed Death Row Records, which is run by Snoop Dogg.
Harris sought for years to gain early release from prison, after recanting his past criminal behavior and starting a number of educational programs inside prison. Trump granted Harris clemency seven years before his scheduled release as one of his final acts in office, which included clemency over weapons charges for the rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black. Harris said President Barack Obama previously denied his request for clemency.
Harris said he met with Trump in New Jersey after his release to share his appreciation. “He told me that a lot of people kept fighting with him about my particular case for some reason,” Harris recalled. “In that conversation, I said, ‘Is there anything I can do for you?’ and he said, ‘You don’t owe me nothing.’”
On Oct. 4, Harris released an economic agenda for the Black community that he asked both major party candidates to embrace. It included greater support for school choice, new government incentives for rent-to-own housing programs, more investments in Black communities and incentives for “accountable policing.” Harris, who says he does not disclose donors to his nonprofit, said his only interaction with Trump since then has been through the social media post.
He said other musical artists he works with, including Snoop Dogg, would make their own decisions about the election. He recently helped put together hip-hop concerts to raise political awareness in Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta, including performances from artists like Rick Ross, T.I., and Waka Flocka Flame. Harris said he is planning another concert in Pittsburgh in the coming week.
“I am just a regular guy who has been through something, who believes we should all do our due diligence,” Harris said. “I am not leading people one way or another. I am just telling people what this organization stands for.”
Trump has said he supports imposing a new death penalty for “everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs,” a category that presumably would have included Harris if the policy had been in place in the 1980s. Trump has also said he plans to give police officers blanket protections from civil lawsuits for their actions.
Harris said he does not support either of those policies.

“I have pause about putting people to death behind drugs because I think people sell drugs out of desperation,” Harris said. “Every man should be accountable for their actions if they do something.”
But he praised Trump’s efforts during his first term in office, including signing the bipartisan First Step Act, which led to the early release of thousands of prisoners with qualifying drug charges, as well as approving more funding to combat sickle cell disease and support historically Black colleges.
“There isn’t a candidate running for anything who I agree with on 100 percent of the issues, but I strongly align with the majority of Donald Trump’s initiatives that aim to improve the lives of underserved communities,” Harris said. “This is why I support him — because he supports us.”
