I believe it was a natural progression of music from Sinatra's Bobbie soxers, 50's music that was thought decadent, then Elvis, then the Beatles, then the music of ghe 60's.
What was happening was the Mockingbird usurpation of the narrative, kind of like you are watching a movie and someone turns the sound down and decides they want to narrate the movie for you. You try to be polite but at some point you need to tell your narrator friend to please leave.
The people were real. The stolen narrative, not.
