US Sending Additional $425M in Military Aid to Ukraine

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/russia-ukraine-war/2024/11/01/id/1186356/

The Biden administration said Friday it will be sending an additional $425 million in military assistance to Ukraine as Kyiv prepares to face Russian forces augmented by more than 10,000 North Korean troops.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had said more aid was coming, and soon, during his visit to Kyiv last week. This aid package includes weapons that will be pulled from existing U.S. stockpiles, including air defense interceptors for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and 155 mm artillery, and armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons.

Ukraine's eastern cities continue to face an onslaught of Russian missile strikes, including one on Kharkiv by a 1,100-pound glide bomb. The attack Thursday hit an apartment complex, killing three and injuring scores.

In addition, Ukraine is facing new uncertainty as waves of North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia have arrived near Ukraine’s border and are preparing to join the fight against Ukrainian troops in the coming days.

Russia has increasingly used powerful glide bombs to pummel Ukrainian positions along the 600-mile line of contact and strike cities dozens of miles from the front line. Kharkiv, a city of 1.1 million, is less than 20 miles from the border.

The aid package announced Friday brings the total amount of military assistance the U.S. has provided Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022 to $60.4 billion.

Voting Machine Firms Prep for Election Harassment

https://www.newsmax.com/us/voting-machines-harassment/2024/11/01/id/1186354/

Staff at U.S. voting machine companies have removed public information about themselves from the internet and have made contingency plans with local law enforcement ahead of the 2024 election, after suffering harassment in 2020, according to industry representatives.

Following the 2020 election, which Republican candidate Donald Trump alleged voter fraud affected the outcome, some workers at election technology vendors reported that they had been "doxxed" — private information about their homes, such as pictures of their front doors, had been shared online, according to Sara Cutter, the executive director of the American Council for Election Technology.

Employees with companies that provide voting machine equipment and services are not taking any chances this time around, Cutter said.

She said they were conferring with police about how to prepare, including in case they are "swatted" — when a false crime is reported to induce a heavy, armed police response at someone's home.

The "level of threat has increased exponentially and has not cooled off since 2020," Cutter said. Her organization was started in 2022 and includes companies like Election Systems & Software and Smartmatic.

She declined to comment on any specific legal preparations being made by the companies, but said some had taken significant actions to plan for any physical threats.

Smartmatic, Dominion Voting Systems and others are also seeking to combat misinformation about themselves and their owners, debunking on their websites a variety of claims that have been shared online, including assertions that billionaire investor George Soros has an ownership stake or that they have ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

Smartmatic, a voting technology provider, sent a letter to media organizations this week in which it asked for "vital cooperation in preventing the spread of misinformation regarding the technology and services we will be providing."

Cutter said voting technology companies have also been offering tours of their facilities and reaching out to election administrators and media to help bring more awareness to how they operate.

In recent days, prominent Trump supporters Elon Musk and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have revived the debunked allegations that results from some voting machines cannot be trusted.

Dominion – whose equipment is in use in precincts with more than 52 million registered voters across 27 states – posted to Musk's X social media platform that it was "closely monitoring claims around the Nov. 2024 election" and "remain fully prepared to defend our company & our customers against lies and those who spread them."

A Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

Dominion employees have faced direct physical threats and a Dominion executive obtained a temporary restraining order in one case in 2022, CNN reported in August.

A Dominion spokesperson declined to comment on the report or on recent steps taken by company staff.

Chris Wlaschin, the chief information security officer for Election Systems & Software, said in an interview that a former address associated with him was posted online after the 2020 election, and that threats and misinformation about him and his colleagues have "continued ever since."

Nate Silver: Pollsters 'Cheating' to Keep Trump, Harris Close

https://www.newsmax.com/politics/nate-silver-pollsters-cheating/2024/11/01/id/1186344/

One prominent Democrat pollster said other pollsters are "cheating" to show the White House race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris remains close in the final days before Election Day.

Silver, who founded FiveThirtyEight, said other pollsters are recycling some results to keep Trump and Harris within a point or two of each other each time polls are released.

"I kind of trust pollsters less," Silver said on his "Risky Business" podcast. "They all, every time a pollster [says] 'Oh, every state is just plus-one, every single state’s a tie,’ no! You’re [expletive] herding! You’re cheating! You’re cheating!

"Your numbers aren't all going to come out at exactly one-point leads when you’re sampling 800 people over dozens of surveys. You are lying! You’re putting your [expletive] finger on the scale!"

Meanwhile, Silver has Trump ahead 55% to 45% nationally. He added that each of the key seven swing states were polling within 2 percentage points

"It doesn’t take a genius to know that if every swing state is a tie, that the overall forecast is a tie," he said

Silver blasted "all these GOP-leaning firms" showing Trump narrowly ahead each time to project that they’re "not going out too far on a limb."

"The pollsters are just [expletiive] punting on this election, for the most part," said Silver, who said The New York Times was an exception to his comment.

"Some of the other, high-quality polls will actually publish numbers that surprise you once in a while. If a pollster never publishes a number that surprises you, then it has no value."

Trump and Harris were tied at 48% in the final New York Times/Siena College poll earlier this month.

Early Friday afternoon, RealClearPolitics showed Trump with a 0.3-point edge nationally and a 0.9-point swing-state advantage.

In a New York Times opinion column last week, Silver said he's finding the close numbers in this year's presidential race "unsatisfying," but his "gut" prediction is that Trump will win.

"My gut says Donald Trump. And my guess is that it is true for many anxious Democrats," Silver wrote in his column.
