Trump starts his final day of campaigning on the nostalgic side

“You have been a very special group to me,” Trump told the crowd.

NATALIE ALLISON 11/04/2024, 1:12PM ET

Donald Trump began his final day on the campaign trail with a rally in Raleigh, not filling the 7,600-capacity Dorton Arena, where seats remained openas he gave a nearly hour-and-a-half speech, at times becoming sentimental about his signature campaign rallies coming to an end.

Trump, who has a packed day of campaigning in three states ahead of him, didn’t bother to shorten his speech.

“Here’s my only purpose in even being here today: get out and vote,” said Trump, who appeared to be in a noticeably better mood than his morning rally yesterday in Pennsylvania, where he criticized the media, polls and argued he shouldn’t have left the White House in 2020.

Trump held a rally here in the same venue on Nov. 7, 2016 — the day before the 2016 election.

“Hopefully, everything will work out well,” he continued. “We’re way leading. All we have to do is close it.”

The last of four rallies in North Carolina in just three days, the Trump campaign is taking no chances in a state he twice won — and the only of the seven battlegrounds that he won four years ago.

Trump railed against a “low IQ” Kamala Harris and “bad, sick woman” Nancy Pelosi, spoke extensively about his billionaire backer Elon Musk, discussed how his daughter-in-law and native North Carolinian Lara Trump educated him about animal rights issues and announced that President Joe Biden had “officially” said he was supporting Trump — something he clarified minutes later was a joke, and had not occurred.

“You have been a very special group to me,” Trump said, bringing the focus of his speech back to the Tar Heel state, after talking about a range of other topics. “In North Carolina, I’ve won everything. The press will say ‘Oh, he rambled.’ No. You know what that is? That was genius.” Despite recent news reports about ongoing finger-pointing in Trumpworld, the former president said that his campaign team “has been fantastic — Chris [LaCivita], Susie [Wiles], everybody.”

Trump, his allies taking the stage andeven his supporters in the crowd were emotional. Over the last week, Trump has reminisced about his nine years of holding political rallies, repeatedly making comments about being at the end of the road of his campaigning for office.

“The first one I attended in 2016 was here,” said Tanna Rhew, 60, of Angier. “So I wanted it to be the last one, too.”

Rep. Dan Bishop, the GOP nominee for state attorney general, thanked the crowd for coming to “this final Trump rally in North Carolina, that we will remember for the rest of our lives.”

Trump himself called the wind-down of his campaign “really, the end of a journey, but a new one will be starting,” he said. “And that's the one we wanted to partake in, which is basically to make America great again.”

Elon Musk’s lawyer defends daily $1 million payments to voters

A judge held a hearing in the lawsuit from the Philadelphia DA, who says the payments are an illegal lottery.

By John Sakellariadis and Josh Gerstein 11/04/2024, 12:47pm ET

A lawyer for MAGA-convert Elon Musk defended the legality of Musk’s $1-million-a-day giveaway to voters, saying the daily payments represent a “salary” to voters rather than illegal lottery payouts.

During a court hearing on Monday at Philadelphia’s City Hall, the judge presiding over a legal challenge to the giveaway did not immediately signal how he plans to rule.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner filed the lawsuit last week, arguing that the promotion run by Musk and his America PAC violates Pennsylvania’s law banning illegal lotteries. Krasner sought a court order shutting down the giveaway, which promised to hand out a $1 million dollar prize to one registered voter each day in exchange for signing a pledge to uphold the First and Second Amendments.

Judge Angelo Foglietta, as well as lawyers for both sides, seemed to acknowledge that issuing a court order now may not have much effect for voters, because the promotion is scheduled to end on Election Day.

“I want to make it clear you both are in agreement that this procedure … is not going to go beyond Election Day,” the judge said.

Musk’s lawyers managed to delay the hearing from last week by seeking to move it to a federal court. A federal judge denied that bid on Friday. Musk did not appear in court.

In his opening statement Monday, Krasner attorney John Summers lamented the delay, but argued that was not an excuse to let the case fizzle.

“This is a moment to hold these defendants accountable,” Summers said. “We very much wish we could have done this earlier.”

Musk’s lawyer Matt Haverstick called the case a “political circus.” He argued the giveaway did not constitute a lottery because the winning recipients were not actually selected “by chance.”

The Pro-Trump America PAC instead chooses registrants whom it believes could serve as powerful spokespeople for its agenda, and the payouts represent a “salary” to them, he said.

Krasner and Summers shot back at that characterization, describing it as unreliable, misleading, and in effect a last-ditch effort to avoid legal accountability.

“It’s about the most amazingly disingenuous defense I’ve heard in recent times,” Krasner said on the witness stand. “They know what they’re doing was illegal, and they’re doing everything under the sun to cover up.”

Haverstick argued the case is moot because the two remaining winners for Monday and Tuesday have already been chosen, and neither is based in Philadelphia.

“What this court can know is that there is no risk of a Philadelphia resident receiving the million dollars or being publicly announced as a recipient of the million dollars,” the GOP election lawyer said.

Musk announced the contest last month. It has given away $17 million prizes to residents of seven swing states, according to the America PAC website and its account on X, the social media platform Musk owns. The latest prize recipient is from Arizona, a post on X said.

The Justice Department warned Musk’s PAC last month that the giveaway might violate federal law against paying citizens to register to vote.

Kamala, beloved Asian elephant at National Zoo, euthanized after failing healthJoshua Barlow | jbarlow@wtop.com

Kamala, a longtime member of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s Asian elephant herd, was euthanized Saturday in D.C. following years of struggling with osteoarthritis.

Even while measures were taken over the last several years to preserve Kamala’s health and quality of life, her physical condition had irreversibly declined, the Smithsonian said in a news release.

“Given Kamala’s declining quality of life and poor long-term prognosis, animal care staff made the decision to humanely euthanize her,” the zoo said in a statement.

Kamala, who was born in the wild, was estimated to be about 50 years old.

After she was put to sleep, the zoo said other members of the elephant herd, Maharani, Swarna, Spike, Bozie, Trong NHI and NHI Linh, were given an opportunity “to spend some time with their deceased herd mate.”

According to the zoo, Kamala was born in Sri Lanka around 1975 and first lived at an elephant orphanage in Pinnawalla, before being moved with her longtime herd mate, Swarna, to the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada. Kamala gave birth to two offspring while in Canada.

Kamala, her daughter Maharani, and Swarna were all transferred to the National Zoo in D.C. in 2014. It was around then animal care staff at the zoo began noticing and treating the symptoms that would eventually develop into severe osteoarthritis.

Her longtime elephant companions, Maharani and Swarna, were the last to visit with Kamala after her passing Saturday afternoon.

“Swarna and Maharani were the last to visit. Maharani spent quite a long time investigating the body, blowing into her mouth and trunk and nudging Kamala’s head,” according to the zoo.
