I've never considered the word "event" to have any special context other than something which happens, loosely.
They know full well what is prophecies say about the world when it is in such a state as it currently is, and the historical records of such events occurring in the past. Yet because they have been born deep into entrenched systems and many of them bear no personal sin for setting the world into this state, they have been desperately looking for reasons not to believe. Many have been fully invested in "proving" that such predictions are false, and really just a hallucinogenic manifestation of an ignorant population, and so they have set themselves to the task of using the powers produced by the human world to force their own desired future instead.
