Taxpayers in Colorado are being stuck with a bill that will total in the millions of dollars because a forensic lab tech for the state’s bureau of investigation “cut corners” with DNA tests that now have undermined the results in hundreds of criminal cases.
Colorado Public Radio reported the next step in the disaster is for the CBI to reach a contract deal with a Wisconsin company that is to assess the state’s forensics lab and its operations.
That comes after former forensic tech Yvonne “Missy” Wood was found “to have manipulated DNA test results of more than 800 cases.”
“CBI told lawmakers that it will cost almost $7.5 million to retest DNA sample tests and potentially retry cases affected,” the report said. Continue…

Despite commanding an $824 billion 2024 budget — funded entirely by hardworking American taxpayers — the Pentagon remains unable to account for vast sums of money.
The Pentagon began its first-ever agency-wide financial audit in 2017. This marked the beginning of a process that had been sought, promised, and delayed for years.
Since undertaking this initial audit, the Pentagon has consistently failed to pass its subsequent audits, the first of which failed in 2018.
Out of the 28 entities audited this year, only 9 received clean opinions, while 15 received disclaimers — meaning they were so disorganized that auditors couldn’t even determine the accuracy of their records.
One received a qualified opinion, meaning the financial statements were mostly accurate but contained certain issues or exceptions that were not fully compliant with standards.

Carr wrote, “Big Tech companies silenced Americans for doing nothing more than exercising their First Amendment rights.” Carr accused the tech giants of “working in concert with so-called media monitors and others – to defund, demonetize and otherwise put out of business news outlets and organizations that dared to deviate from an approved narrative.”

President Zelensky in a message claimed Ukraine anti-air forces were able to shoot down over 140 of the inbound Russian projectiles. But building fires and damage across the country point to many dozens of drone and missiles having got through to hit targets.

Leading climate experts, including Ban Ki-moon, Mary Robinson, Christiana Figueres, and Johan Rockström, are calling for significant changes to UN climate summits, according to a new report from The Guardian.
They argue future conferences should only be hosted by nations demonstrating strong climate action and advocate for stricter controls on fossil fuel lobbyists. Over 1,700 industry lobbyists attended Cop29, raising concerns about undue influence.
The group has urged the UN to streamline the annual summits, amplify the voices of developing countries, and increase meeting frequency to better address the climate crisis.
“It is now clear that the Cop is no longer fit for purpose. We need a shift from negotiation to implementation,” they wrote.

While the Trudeau government begins to curb the number of study permits it issues, the number of international students filing asylum claims is skyrocketing, many of which are suspected to have been filed on fraudulent grounds.
Nearly 14,000 international students filed asylum claims in the first nine months of this year after arriving in Canada, marking a new record number of claimants, despite the overall drop off in permits.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller isn’t ruling out fraudulent claims amid the unprecedented spike in students claiming asylum. He believes some students are being counselled to do so by outside consultants.
Miller told the Globe and Mail in an interview that he suspected the spike in asylum claims, many of which were filed by first year students, to be “mostly false.”
“It is quite obvious someone that’s here, that’s been here a year or even more, claiming asylum where no conditions have changed in their home country – it doesn’t smell good, it doesn’t look good,” said Miller.
“Clearly there is advice being given for people that are here that would otherwise have to go home to claim asylum, and that is not the intention of the asylum system as we have it in Canada.” Continue…

The Liberals’ recent about-face on immigration levels will cut Canada’s housing gap almost in half by 2030.
According to a report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer published Friday, the Liberals’ 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan will reduce the housing gap by 534,000 units, or 45%.
Based on the new reduced immigration levels, the housing gap is estimated to be 658,000 units by 2030 instead of the initially projected 1.2 million units.
The report projected an estimated 1.7 million net housing completions by 2030. Closing the housing gap would require 2.3 million housing completions by 2030, averaging 390,000 completions per year between 2025 and 2030.
“We judge that there is significant risk to the demographic projection presented in the Government’s new immigration plan—particularly to the projected outflow of non-permanent residents,” reads the report. “Our estimated reductions in household formation and the housing gap are uncertain and likely represent upper-bound estimates.”

Authorization to use the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) was reportedly prompted by Russia’s alleged move to utilize North Korean troops in the conflict, the outlet said.
"Russian and North Korean forces operating in Kursk Region" of western Russia are apparently the intended targets for the weapons, the officials told NYT. Russia has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of North Korean troops on its soil, saying that its cooperation with Pyongyang is proceeding according to a defense partnership treaty.
