Roby wins Alabama GOP runoff, overcoming blowback from Trump criticism

Rep. Martha Roby is projected to win Alabama’s GOP primary runoff in the state’s 2nd District, overcoming the blowback from her past criticism of President Trump during the 2016 election after earning his endorsement.

Roby defeated former Rep. Bobby Bright, a Democrat-turned Republican whom she unseated in 2010, the AP reported.

Roby was forced into the runoff with Bright after failing to clinch the 50 percent needed in the June GOP primary.

The four-term congresswoman has continued to face Republican backlash since declaring in 2016 she wouldn’t vote for Trump in the wake of the “Access Hollywood” tape scandal where the then candidate was heard bragging about kissing and groping women without consent.

But Roby went into Tuesday’s runoff favored to win especially after President Trump endorsed her last month and key Washington allies ran ads on her behalf. She also heavily outraised and outspent Bright.

Roby has sought to come back from her Trump criticism as a fervent support of the president’s agenda, voting with him 96.5 percent of the time.

Avenatti calls Trump a 'Manchurian candidate'

Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who is representing adult firm star Stormy Daniels in her case against President Trump, decried the president as a "Manchurian candidate" during a speech outside the White House on Tuesday.

“Our troops didn't die in Yorktown, didn't take Normandy beach, didn't rebuild Europe and secure the postwar peace that you are now destroying, Mr. President, for you to live as a Manchurian candidate in our White House," Avenatti said during the speech.

Dems call for hearings on Trump’s CFPB nominee to be put on hold

Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee are calling on the panel's chairman, Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), to delay Thursday’s hearing for President Trump’s nominee to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) if the administration does not respond to requests for information in time.

In a letter sent Tuesday night, which The Hill obtained, the panel's Democrats said the administration has not responded to requests for relevant documents and other information in advance of Thursday’s hearing. Senators are scheduled to consider the nominations of Kathleen Kraninger to lead the CFPB and Kimberly Reed to be the president of the Export-Import Bank.

“If the administration is unwilling or unable to provide responsive information in a timely manner, we respectfully ask that you postpone Thursday’s hearing on any nominee with outstanding information requests until such time as the information is available,” they asked Crapo.

A spokesperson for Crapo told The Hill the hearing is still scheduled for Thursday.

Chicago police union fights state's 'bizarre' proposed consent decree after Obama-era DOJ investigation

The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police is fighting to get a pending consent decree it considers heavily anti-police tossed out before the document is enacted and potentially brings a dramatic overhaul to the city’s police policy.

“The consent decree will make the simplest police duties and actions rife with ambiguity, and set up officers for discipline no matter how professional or appropriate their conduct,” Chicago FOP Vice President Martin Preib wrote in a statement to Fox News.

The proposal stems from a lawsuit filed in 2017 by State Attorney General Lisa Madigan against the City of Chicago. Madigan filed the suit after a proposed federal consent decree under the Obama administration was not pursued by the Trump administration and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Police say one proposal they’re most concerned about would require officers to fill out a report every time they point their gun at a person.

A portion of a decree draft reads, “Any time a CPD officer points a firearm at a person, the incident should be documented in a written report containing: the subject’s actual or perceived race, ethnicity, age and gender; the officer’s badge number, rank, and unit; the date, time and location of the incident; the outcome of the incident, including whether an arrest or citation was issued; and a narrative describing the reasons for the officer’s actions.”

A police source tells Fox News some officers pull their guns out “every night” in some districts, and if the consent decree is passed, each time could become a “lawsuit.” The source said, “Imagine the headlines: This officer has 200 documented instances of pointing his gun. All the targets were minorities.”

According to The Daily Beast:

National Security Council’s Intelligence Chief Is Leaving as John Bolton Cleans House

Michael Barry, the senior National Security Council director for intelligence programs, is leaving the White House, according to two government officials.

Barry’s departure adds to the growing list of vacant senior NSC positions since the appointment of new National Security Adviser John Bolton, who is said to be restaffing the influential policymaking body with his own staff choices.

Barry’s departure is on “very good terms,” one source said, but it will be a “tough loss for the NSC.” According to the source, Barry is returning to the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served before joining the NSC staff.

Barry, a CIA veteran, was well received on the NSC when he joined last fall, largely because he was replacing Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who had repeatedly clashed with the CIA, fellow NSC staffers, and Cabinet officials during his tenure.

Former national security adviser H.R. McMaster fired Cohen-Watnick in August 2017 and brought on Barry soon after.
