Leaving the Soviet Hell

Witness to history - Antoni Walawender.

The NKVD began the operation from 9 to 10 February 1940, during which over 140 thousand Polish citizens were deported from the Kresy of the Second Polish Republic deep into the Soviet Union, deep into the Siberian taiga, to the steppes of Soviet Kazakhstan. Ten-year-old Antoni Walawender was also a victim of this terrible crime.

Antoni Walawender, the son of Stanisław and Maria (née Babiarz) Walawender, was born on October 28, 1929, in Duninów (near Mielnica), Borszczów district, Tarnopol province. He lived happily with his parents and family until February 10th, 1940.
