Note: Make of it what you will, subliminal messaging or threats, to who?

The Day of the Jackal

Eddie Redmayne plays the titular character, the Jackal, in the 2024 TV mini-series adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s classic novel. The Jackal is a ruthless and elusive assassin who makes his living carrying out high-stakes hits for the highest fee. The series follows a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase between the Jackal and a tenacious British intelligence officer across Europe.

Character Development

In this fresh take on the source material, the Jackal is no longer an isolated character without apparent ties. Instead, we gradually learn about his rich backstory and his bond with his wife, Nuria (played by Úrsula Corberó). As Nuria’s suspicions about his work grow, the emotional pressures on the Jackal increase, adding a layer of complexity to his character.

Muddy Morality

According to Eddie Redmayne, the show’s muddy morality is a deliberate choice, blurring the lines between heroes and villains. In an interview, Redmayne discussed the show’s exploration of the moral gray areas, saying, “In the 51 years since the first Day of the Jackal film, audience demand for espionage stories hasn’t changed, but the world certainly has… We felt there was a need to blur the clear-cut presentation of heroes and villains in the original.”

The Series

The Day of the Jackal is a 10-episode series that promises a gripping chase across the world as the hunter becomes the hunted. With a fresh twist on the source material, the show features a talented cast, including Lashana Lynch and Ben Hall, and is set to premiere on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
