Senate Majority Leader-Elect Thune: Senate Republicans ‘Excited’ to Put Trump’s Agenda into Action

NICK GILBERTSON 13 Nov 2024

Senate Majority Leader-elect John Thune (R-SD) declared that Republicans in the next U.S. Senate “are excited” to enact President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda.

Thune tweeted that he spoke with Trump after his Republican colleagues elected him to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress.

“Just got off the phone with [Donald Trump.] Senate Republicans are excited and ready to get to work implementing President Trump’s agenda on behalf of the American people,” Thune wrote in a post on X.

He expressed a similar sentiment at his press conference earlier in the afternoon. After saying the American people “have loudly rejected the failed policies of the Biden-Harris-Schumer agenda,” Thune shared that Senate Republicans “are excited” to work with their counterparts in the House of Representatives “to enact President Trump’s agenda.”

“We have a mandate from the American people, a mandate not only to clean up the mess left by the Biden-Harris-Schumer agenda but also to deliver on President Trump’s priorit5ies,” Thune said.

Thune pointed to enforcing “border security laws,” “streamlining the bureaucratic machine,” and unleashing “American energy dominance” as several critical areas of focus:

• We will make sure that the President and his team have the tools and support that they need to enforce border security laws and to remove the violent criminals who are wreaking havoc in every one of our states.

• We will work to make America prosperous again by streamlining the bureaucratic machine and overturning costly Biden-Harris regulations,

• and we will work to restore American energy dominance, not just our energy security, but energy dominance, which will lower costs and bolster our national security.

Thune beat out two competitors, Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Rick Scott (R-FL), to earn the majority leader position. Scott, who was backed by many Trump allies, including Elon Musk and Tucker Carlson, drew just 13 votes on the first ballot to Thune’s 23 and Cornyn’s 15.

Thune won on the second ballot with 29 votes to Cornyn’s 24.

“I’m excited to get to work with this team right away,” Thune said. “And I want to thank my colleagues who placed their faith in me to serve as leader, and to those who were supporting another candidate: I promise to be a leader who serves the entire Republican Conference.”

I wonder if PDJT promised to release him from his bondage of McConnell? If anyone can change things it's Trump.

Republican Rep. Michael McCaul Detained by Police After ‘Poor Decision’ to Mix Ambien, Alcohol

Bradley Jaye 13 Nov 202414

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) was detained by law enforcement early in November after what he called “the result of a poor decision” to mix Ambien and alcohol.

The incident, first reported Wednesday by Semafor’s Kadia Goba, took place at Dulles International Airport.

A McCaul spokesperson confirmed the incident to Semafor, describing McCaul as a “nervous flyer” who took Ambien and consumed alcohol before departing Dulles to return to Texas.

He never made that flight, according to a spokesperson, and was later found by police and detained under the assumption of intoxication.

The spokesperson added that McCaul was disoriented from the combination of Ambien and alcohol and had locked himself out of his phone.

“Two weekends ago, I made a mistake — one for which I take full responsibility,” McCaul said in a statement to Semafor.

“I missed a flight to Texas and found myself disoriented in the airport. This was the result of a poor decision I made to mix an Ambien — which I took in order to sleep on the upcoming flight — with some alcohol. Law enforcement officers briefly detained me while I waited for a family member to pick me up.”

McCaul added to Semafor that he has “nothing but respect and gratitude for the officers who intercepted me that evening. This incident does not reflect who I am and who I strive to be. As a human, I am not perfect. But I am determined to learn from this mistake and, God-willing, make myself a better person.”

McCaul is Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, although he is term limited and would need a waiver from Republican leadership to remain through next Congress.

House Republicans Nominate Mike Johnson for Speaker

Sean Moran 13 Nov 2024

The House Republican Conference on Wednesday nominated Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to continue serving as the leader of the House.

Johnson ran unopposed for the position, and won the Speaker nomination on a unanimous vote. The voice vote in favor of the Louisiana Republican’s bid for Speaker serves as a setback to some conservatives who wanted to set a recorded vote on the speakership nomination.

Johnson will take his nomination to the House floor on January 3, through which he will need a majority of the chamber to continue leading the House.

The Hill reported:

Johnson has sought to keep his grasp on the gavel after winning the top job in a whirlwind process last year following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Shortly before Wednesday’s vote, he secured support from President-elect Trump, a boon for his candidacy and path to the gavel going forward.During a meeting with House Republicans Wednesday morning, Trump called Johnson a “good guy” and said “I’m with him all the way,” a source in the room told The Hill.

On Tuesday, Johnson said he was confident about having the nearly unanimous party support to secure his speakership on the House floor.

Conservatives from the House Freedom Caucus and elsewhere have been critical of Johnson’s backing of aid for Ukraine, opposition to privacy reforms for Section 702 of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and ramming through legislation with Democrat support.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who had led a movement this past congressional term to oust Johnson with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), has not ruled out voting for Johnson for Speaker.

“I think whoever’s in charge here in the House, their job is to pass President Trump’s agenda,” she remarked.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), who had also been critical of the Speaker, said,“Ultimately, I want the President to take the field with the team that he wants on the field.”
