1. There Are 80K Jews in Hungary

Today Hungary is home to approximately 80,000 Jewish people, most of whom are native Hungarian Jews. Since some Hungarian Jews intermarried as early as the 19th century and many chose to hide their Judaism after the Holocaust, it is very hard to ascertain accurate numbers as many Jews may have been “under the radar” for generations, and some do not know themselves that they are Jewish.

1. The Lion’s Share Live in Budapest

Budapest’s seventh district was historically the Jewish quarter, and the site of the Nazi-era Ghetto, into which 70,000 Jews were crammed. Today, the quarter is still home to historic synagogues, kosher restaurants, a mikvah, as well as several Chabad Houses. However, Jewish people are scattered all across the greater metropolitan area, from the villas in the hills of Buda to the stately apartment buildings of Pest.

1. There Were Oberlanders and Unterlanders

Jews living in the western highlands, the Oberlanders, tended to be culturally similar to their compatriots in Austria and Germany, speaking German-tinged Yiddish and following Ashkenazic customs. Conversely, the Unterlanders, from the eastern lowlands, tended to be much more aligned with the Chassidic communities in Galicia, sharing their dialect of Yiddish and more cloistered ways.

4.Jewish Hungary Has Its Own Borders

As borders moved and empires rose and fell, Jews created conceptual borders of their own, which sometimes happened to coincide with those drawn by monarchs and generals.

Thus,Jewish Hungary extended deep into what is now Ukraine and Romania on the west, Slovakia on the north, Austria on the east, and Serbia on the south.

This explains why some of Hungary’s most prominent leaders—such as the Chatam Sofer in Pressburg (Bratislava, Slovakia), the Minchat Elazar in Munkach (Mukachevo,Ukraine), and the rebbe of Satmar (Satu Mar, Romania)—did not even live in what we now consider Hungary.

1. Hungarian Jewry Was Nearly Decimated in the Spring of ‘44

While Fascist Hungary aligned itself with the Germans, and Jews were heavily discriminated against, Hungarian Jews were largely spared from mass extermination until the German invasion in March of 1944. In less than two months, nearly half a million Hungarian Jews were deported to the death camps in Poland. By the war’s end, the Hungarian Jewish population was cut down from 800,000 to 200,000.

1. Hungary Was Originally Sephardic

While Hungarian Jews today (and their descendants) are predominantly Ashkenazim, the Hungarian Jewish community during much of the 16th and 17th centuries was predominantly Sephardic, as much of Hungary was then part of the Ottoman Empire. With the defeat of the Ottomans, many of the Jewish community were raped, murdered or sold into slavery, and their synagogues burnt. In time,an Ashkenazic community sprang upin their place.

1. The “National Anthem” of Hungarian Jewry Is About a Colorful Bird

The Chassidic movement came to Hungary, in part, due to the pioneering efforts of Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac of Kalev, an early Chassidic master (1751–1821). He made famous the song Szól a Kakas Már, which he adapted from a Hungarian folk song he “purchased” from a shepherd. Beginning in Hungarian with a vision of a beautiful bird at sunrise, it ends in Hebrew by longingly praying for the arrival of Moshiach.

Today, this song is the unofficial anthem of Hungarian Jewry, sung at communal events, celebrations, and ceremonies.

1. The Government Officially Recognized Three Groups From Around 1870

As the Enlightenment swept through Western and Central Europe, the Hungarian Jewish community was torn. Some wanted to follow the German Jews, who were fast reforming (or abandoning) the traditions of their forefathers, while others wished to maintain their fealty to Judaism as it had been practiced for generations.

After much internal strife, the community was officially recognized as three entities by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy: Orthodox (who clung devotedly to tradition), Neolog (which promoted religious reforms and cultural assimilation), and Status Quo (a smaller group, who did not follow the leaders of either group).

1. Sixty Percent of Hungarian Nobel Laureates Were Jewish

Depending on what criteria are used, one can say that between 14 and 21 Hungarians have been awarded Nobel Prizes. Of them, approximately 60% are either Jewish or of Jewish descent. This is astonishing when one considers that Jews comprise less than 1% of the Hungarian population today and have never constituted more than 10% of the population.

Following the Holocaust, droves of Hungarian Jews migrated to Israel, the US, Canada, South America, and Australia.

In time, many Chassidic groups reestablished themselves, using the Yiddish names of their cities of origin. Thus, strolling in Brooklyn, one encounters the Pupa synagogue (founded by members of the Chassidic group that once flourished in Pápa), the mikvah of the Kerestirer Rebbe (originally from Bodrogkeresztúr), the synagogue of the Rebbe of Kalev (known in Hungarian as Nagykálló), and of course, many foods bear the certification of the erstwhile Rabbi of Debretzin (Debrecen).

1. There Are Many Israelis in Hungary

Since the 1990s Israelis have come to Hungary (a 3-hour flight from Tel Aviv) for business and touring. Some come for a short time, but others stay. Hungary also attracts many Israeli medical students, who find it easier to gain entry into Hungary’s academic institutions than those in Israel. Thus, some Chabad Centers in Hungary cater specifically to Israeli families and students.

Austin to Celebrate 25-Year Anniversary with Partnership2Gether in Israel

This year marks the 25th anniversary ofAustin participating in the Partnership-2Gether program. Partnership2Gether is a global platform promoting people-to-people relationships between Budapest, Israel and communities throughout the world. Austin is one of 17 communities in the Western Galilee Partnership. Worldwide, Partnership2Gether connects 300 Jewish communities in 43 partnerships.

Austin’s partnership with the city of Akko and the Matte Asher region in the Western Galilee of Israel, forge relationships through endeavors that build Jewish identity and strengthen ties as we share cultural, social, medical, educational and economic programs. One of these programs is Shalom Austin’s Mission Trip to Israel. The trip begins on November 6 in Haifa and ends on November 17 in Tel Aviv, with activities planned every day in between.

“This trip is just the beginning of building a lifelong connection to Israel,” said Shalom Austin CEO Rabbi Daniel A. Septimus. “Travel experiences like this serve to strengthen Jewish identity, build Jewish community, and grow Jewish philanthropy. In exploring the world together, we create community amongst ourselves in Austin and with Jewish people everywhere.”

Leading the trip to Israel in November 2023 is Rabbi Septimus and Shalom Austin Chief Learning and Engagement Officer and Director of the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Jewish Culture and Education Rachel Stern. Also on the Israel Mission Trip team are co-chairs Val and Jeff Newberg and Kim and Matt Schocket. All except one member of the team are making return trips to Israel and say they are excited about this unique experience to travel with members of their community.

“What makes this trip impossible to pass up is that it really is for everyone. There is the flexibility to design an individual Israel experience by joining different tracts that meet each person’s trip desires,” said Stern. “We especially took into account people traveling alone and for the first time, understanding that traveling to a foreign country alone can be intimidating. This trip is designed to meet the needs of every type of traveler.”

Former Mossad agent to speak about Israel’s daring ‘Operation Moses’ mission

Learn the real story behind the Netflix spy thriller film “Red Sea Diving Resort” on Jan. 13, when Gad Shimron, a former Mossad agent, relates his personal recollections about the covert operation that brought Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

In 1977, Israel’s Mossad spy agency was given an assignment far different from its usual cloak-and-dagger activities. It was ordered by then Prime Minister Menachem Begin to rescue thousands of Jewish Ethiopian refugees in Sudan and bring them to the Jewish state.

No stranger to actions in enemy countries, Mossad established a covert forward base in a deserted holiday village in Sudan, then deployed a handful of operatives to launch and oversee the exodus of the refugees to Israel, by sea and by air, in the early 1980s. This became known as “Operation Moses.”

Shimron’s book, “Mossad Exodus: The Daring Undercover Rescue of the Lost Jewish Tribe,” offers a thrilling firsthand account of how the Mossad team in Sudan brought it off, despite great personal risk. The book tells how the agents ran a partying vacation spot for wealthy tourists by day and stole through the Sudanese desert to rescue desperate refugees by night. Shimron also tells of the CIA’s later involvement in the mission, especially when the Israelis had to be smuggled out of Sudan while being hunted by Libyan secret service agents.

“Operation Moses” was just the beginning. The latest wave of immigration from Ethiopiaresumed in December. Many thousands are still waiting, in limbo and harsh conditions, to join their families in Israel. Most left their homes and villages long ago to wait in Gondar and Addis Ababa, two Ethiopian cities with strong Jewish communities.

Over the past 40 years, the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and other Jewish federations have worked together with The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Israeli government to bring more than 92,000 Ethiopians to Israel.

The Ministry of justice asked to liquidate the representative office of “Sokhut” in Russia

The main department of the Ministry of Justice in Moscow asks to liquidate the representative office of the Jewish Agency in Russia(“Sokhut”; is engaged in repatriation to Israel and assistance to returnees), the press service of the Basmanny Court told RBC.

“So far, pre-trial preparations have been scheduled for July 28 at 9:20. A meeting will be scheduled after the pre-trial [preparation]. There is no date for the meeting, the date of the meeting will be after July 28,” the court said.

RBC sent a request to ANO “Sokhut” and appealed for comment to the Israeli Embassy in Moscow.

The Sokhnut agency was founded in 1929, it facilitated the repatriation of Jews to Palestinian lands, and after Israel's independence, it contributed to the Israeli state. In Russia, there is a representative office of the agency, ANO "Sukhut". As reported on the website of the organization, it has offices and partners in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Rostov, Pyatigorsk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk.

On July 5, the Jerusalem Post reported that the Russian government demanded that the leadership of Sokhutn stop operations in Russia.

In “Sukhut” in an interview with the publication confirmed the fact of receiving such a letter. It noted that the work of the Jewish Agency’s unit in Russia “is required to make certain adjustments from time to time.” “Contacts with the authorities take place constantly, in order to continue our activities in accordance with the rules established by the competent authorities,” Sokhnut told the publication.

In an interview with RBC, the representative of the agency noted that the requirements for the immediate termination of the operation of the Sokhnut unit were not received. He also noted that the Jewish Agency works in Russia in accordance with the requirements of the authorities, reports NEWSru.co.il. “Centeredly, we are in dialogue with them to continue to work as usual,” the representative of Sokhnut said.

According to the source of the Jerusalem Post, the Russian authorities suspected the Jewish Agency of__ illegal collection of information_ about Russian citizens. According to the newspaper, Sokhnut was demanding to stop activities amid growing tensions between the two countries because of Israel’s position in relation to the Russian special operation in Ukraine, its support for Kiev and President Volodymyr Zelensky

As the son of Holocaust survivors, Elizabeth Wilf and Joseph Wilf z”l, Mark has drawn upon his parents’ experiences to become an unwavering advocate for needs of the Jewish people, wherever they may be. The Wilf family, a major and longtime supporter of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, is the largest contributor to its world-renowned Holocaust History Museum. The Wilfs are also key sustained benefactors of Yeshiva University in New York. In 2002, the family made a substantial donation to enhance the main campus, renamed as the Wilf Campus of Yeshiva University.

Mark serves on a variety of educational, philanthropic and educational boards including the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, American Society for Yad Vashem, NYU School of Law, Princeton University President’s Advisory Council, Yeshiva University, Vanderbilt University and NFL Business Ventures.

Doron Almog, the Chairman of the Executive of The Jewish Agency for Israel as of August 2022, has a storied history as a leader in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)and as a social activist. In 2016 he received theIsrael Prize, the country’s highest honor for lifetime achievement.

Doron excelled in his service in the IDF’s most elite units and was a leader in many of Israel’s battles, ultimately rising to the position ofCommander of the IDF’s Southern Command.Along the way he led an operational task force against the terrorists who murdered the Israeli olympics team in 1973; commanded the first task force to land in the 1976 Entebbe rescue mission; commanded a number of clandestine missions to bring Jews from Ethiopia to Israel, as well as commanded a company during the Yom Kippur War, the war during which his brother was tragically killed; and led an elite paratroopers brigade during the first Lebanon War.

Upon his retirement from the IDF, Doron established the Adi Negev-Nahalat Eran residential and outpatient rehabilitation center for children, teens and young adults with severe disabilities (formerly called ALEH) – named after his son Eran z”l. The center was the first such rehabilitation facility in the Negev, and is a pioneer in opportunities for Israeli youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Doron also held roles on councils, committees and boards that serve a wide range of goals and populations, among them the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, the economic development of the Bedouin community in the Negev, a scholarship fund for former lone soldiers, and more. In recognition of his contributions to society, 15 organizations and businesses have bestowed upon him various prizes and awards.

Major General Almog holds an MA in International Relations from Haifa University and an MBA from Tel Aviv University. He is a former Senior Research Fellow at Harvard, and has published numerous books and studies in the areas of security and strategy.

In February 2021, The Jewish Agency’s Board of Governors elected Adv. Yaron Shavit to the role of Deputy Chairman of the Executive of The Jewish Agency.

Yaron completed his law studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and holds a master’s degree from Bar Ilan University. As part of his professional activities as a lawyer he specialized in commercial litigation, insurance law, professional liability, computer law, and copyright. He is a graduate of the first mediation course initiated by the Supreme Court President in conjunction with the Israel Bar Association and the Israel Court administration.

Throughout his life, Yaron has combined professional activity with service in the military reserve, during which he performed a wide variety of roles and was promoted to the rank of colonel. He continues to perform active reserve duty as part of his social commitment and volunteer work.

Yaron lives in Mevasseret Zion where he is an active member and past chair of the Kamatz Reform Jewish congregation. He served as chairman of the Reform Movement in Israel in 2008-2012, and is serving as a member of the Zionist Executive and the Board of Governors of The Jewish Agency since 2006. In October 2020, he was elected by the members of the 38th Zionist Congress to serve as its President – the three-day congress was the first to be held as an “On-Line” Zionist Congress.

Yaron was born in 1958, is married to Michal, the father of three children, and a happy grandfather to four grandchildren (so far). His family has expanded to include a young Na’aleh program participant and a young lone soldier who graduated from the Kol Ami Mechina program.

Bruce Sholk, Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee of The Jewish Agency for Israel, has been a member of the Board of Governors since 2005. Prior to assuming his current position in July 2022, he served in numerous leadership positions for the organization.

Bruce has a long history of philanthropic efforts focused on Israel and its connection to the diaspora, as well as Jewish life on the college campus. Bruce served as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of Hillel International. He is a member of the Board of Masa, and was a founding board member of Tamid, a campus-based organization that connects business-minded college students to Israel. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Technion. He was previously Chair of the Board of THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and was a long-time member of the Board of JFNA and UIA.

Bruce is the Managing Member and founder of Axcel Partners, a private equity investment partnership, with a focus on investment in Israeli technology companies. Bruce received a Master’s in Business Administration from Carnegie-Mellon University.

Bruce and his wife, Beth Kaplan, have two sons, Henry and Seth.
