NEW YORK (AP) — Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has tried to reach out to prospective witnesses and influence public opinion from jail in a bid to affect potential jurors for his upcoming sex trafficking trial, prosecutors claimed in a court filing urging a judge to reject his latest bail request.
The government accusations were made in a Manhattan federal court filing late Friday that opposes the music mogul’s latest $50 million bail proposal. A bail hearing is scheduled for next week.
Prosecutors wrote that a review of recorded jail calls made by Combs shows he has asked family members to reach out to potential victims and witnesses and has urged them to create “narratives” to influence the jury pool. They say he also has encouraged marketing strategies to sway public opinion.
“The defendant has shown repeatedly — even while in custody — that he will flagrantly and repeatedly flout rules in order to improperly impact the outcome of his case. The defendant has shown, in other words, that he cannot be trusted to abide by rules or conditions,” prosecutors wrote in a submission that contained redactions.
Prosecutors wrote that it could be inferred from his behavior that Combs wants to blackmail victims and witnesses into silence or into providing testimony helpful to his defense.
Lawyers for Combs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Prosecutors said Combs, 55, began breaking rules almost as soon as he was detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after his September arrest.
He has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with the aid of a network of associates and employees, while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings.
Two judges have concluded he is a danger to the community and a risk to flee.

A trainee teacher who shared videos of newborn babies being raped has avoided jail time.
Jacob Chouffot, 26, shared and received more than a thousand of the most serious Category A films and photos.
The 26-year-old of Iffley, Oxford confessed to 14 counts of making, possessing and distributing child abuse images from 2015 until 2019.
However the sex offender has avoided time behind bars after pleading guilty, the Sun reports.
The former trainee teacher left his job in November 2022 after being arrested by the police, Oxford Crown court heard.
In a following police interview, he confessed to possessing the sickening videos, which he distributed to other vile predators on Telegram and WhatsApp.
Eighteen months later, the paedophile was charged and pleaded guilty at his first hearing.
Chouffot stored and distributed the harrowing footage on two mobile phones, the court was told.
One of the mobile devices had 570 Category A photos as well as 484 videos of children, with some as young as six months old.
The other phone had 462 Category A photos and videos of newborns, the court heard.
Between the two mobile phones, there were 228 Category B and 63 Category C snaps.
Julian Lynch, prosecuting, said: 'The obvious aggravating feature is the very young age of the children.
'This is more than a trivial number of mostly moving images.'
Kellie Enever, defending, argued that Chouffot had been abused from the age of 11, and had used drink and drugs to self-medicate during the offending period.
Judge Nigel Daly handed Chouffot a two-year suspended sentence, noting that the mitigating factors outweighed the age of the sexual offender's victims.
The judge told Chouffot: 'This offending involves two devices and multiple different categories.
'These include babies. This is quite shocking.'
The ex-teacher has been ordered to complete 30 rehab sessions, 180 hours of unpaid work and has also been made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
He is also required to sign the sex offenders register for the next decade.

Biden authorizes Ukraine to use long-range US weapons in Russia
The decision to allow use of the Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, inside Russia had been under consideration for months. American officials had been divided on the wisdom of allowing the new capability. Some had concerns about escalating the war, while others worried about dwindling stockpiles of the weapons.
The US refused to even provide ATACMS to Ukraine for the first two years of the war, in part because of readiness concerns as the powerful missiles require time and complex components to produce. But Biden secretly approved the transfer of the long-range ATACMS missiles in February for use inside Ukrainian territory, and the US delivered the missiles in April.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky had been pressing Washington to allow use of the weapons inside Russia, too, arguing he needed the capability to gain momentum in his war effort.
When Biden and Zelensky last met at the White House in September, the Ukrainian leader came with a detailed list of targets inside Russia that he wanted to hit with US-provided long-range missiles, according to sources familiar with the meeting.
The list was a key part of Zelensky’s “victory plan” for winning the war. Biden, who nearly three years into the war had prohibited the Ukrainians from deploying the missile systems for deep strikes into Russia, was not entirely dismissive of the request, the sources said. But he was ultimately noncommittal, and the leaders agreed to keep discussing the issue.
The Ukrainians have already conducted several successful strikes deep inside Russia using their own long-range drones that have damaged Russia’s defense industrial base, US officials note — drones that have a far longer range than the ATACMs.
