Kate Brown is always dig worthy. You're off on the wrong track with the Hammond's. Their place adjoins the Malheur Wildlife Refuge near Burns Oregon. They may have property in Baker County, but it's news to me.
According to DOGAMI, there are no recoverable mineral resources in the area of the refuge or Hammond's ranch in Burns. The recoverable uranium deposits are in the McDermitt caldera just west of McDermitt NV/OR.
Hammond's problems with the Refuge and BLM go way back, way before the recent exploratory activity near the Bretz mine down south.
The Hammond's problems originated over water, which is the most valuable thing in this region of the sagebrush steppe.
