The United States has spent at least $2.8 trillion on counterterrorism since 9/11 – The task still consumes a sixth of America’s annual discretionary spending

The United States has spent a lot of money on counterterrorism since the 9/11 attacks. But nobody has been keeping good track of just how much, until now.

A bipartisan group of national security and budget experts convened by the Stimson Center estimated in a new report on May 16 that the cumulative tally is at least $2.8 trillion, and that the annual spending rate — while less than it used to be — still amounts to about 15 percent of the nation’s discretionary budget.

Federal Death Penalty Prosecutors Accuse One Another of Destroying Evidence and Other Misconduct in Discrimination Lawsuit

A team of federal prosecutors charged with promoting “consistency and fairness” in death penalty cases has been hurling incredible, on-the-record accusations against one another — from neglecting boxes of evidence to destroying interview notes — and defense attorneys want to know why this is the first they’re hearing about this alleged misconduct.

Publicly, prosecutors typically are tight-lipped about missteps. But a recent internal dispute and civil lawsuit prompted some members of the Capital Case Section to speak up about serious misconduct in some death penalty cases.

In 2016, federal prosecutor Jacabed Rodriguez-Coss sued the Justice Department, alleging supervisors in the Capital Case Section discriminated against her and retaliated when she filed a complaint. A judge tossed out her lawsuit in late June, according to court records, and she intends to appeal.

While Rodriguez-Coss’s lawsuit had nothing to do with how federal prosecutors behaved in a courtroom, both sides dredged up alleged misconduct in how they handled death penalty cases.

No Nerve Agents Found – The OPCW Interim Report on Douma

In terms of suffering caused, there is often not, in fact, much to choose between dismembering and burning people alive with high explosives, shredding them with shrapnel, and choking them with poison gas. Modern ‘conventional’ weapons can be far more cruel and devastating than, for example, chlorine gas. But chemical weapons, prohibited by international law, are extremely potent in allowing Western ‘humanitarians’ to justify ‘intervention’ in response to crimes – real, hyped or imagined – that the West has itself far surpassed using more respectable forms of mass murder.

Zakharova: The unilateral coercive economic measures against Syria are harming its people

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria are harming the Syrian people and impeding the process of rebuilding the country, calling for lifting them.

The Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow welcomes any initiatives by the international community aimed at providing practical assistance to Syria and its people and achieving a settlement based on the international law, foremost of which is the UN Security Council Resolution No.2254.

Speaking about the humanitarian situation in southern Syria, Zakharova said that the situation is improving in coincidence with the Syrian Arab Army’s achievements on the ground.

She affirmed that these achievements over terrorism in Syria and the return of stability to most of the country’s territory pave the way for the start of work to overcome one of the most serious consequences of the crisis in Syria, which is the displaced Syrians.

The spokeswoman pointed out that the return of the displaced requires rebuilding the economic and social infrastructure and the creation of new jobs in addition to demining, which are difficult tasks for the Syrian government to implement alone.

Moscow considers that joint efforts for the return of the displaced and the economic and social reconstruction of Syria is necessary to achieve the task of final elimination of Daesh (ISIS) and other terrorist organizations and remove the causes that produce the ideology of terrorism and extremism, she said.

Zakharova pointed out that her country does not rule out the occurrence of provocations using chemical weapons in Idleb by the terrorists to accuse the Syrian Arab Army.

She added that there is information about the arrival of large numbers of vehicles carrying members of the “White Helmets” to the city of Idleb, including specialists in chemistry.

Zakharova said that large quantities of rocket weapons had been transferred and that there is no doubt that these missiles will be used by the “White Helmets” for propaganda purposes, citing intentions to produce news and concoctions that the Syrian army is bombing Idleb with chemical weapons, a scenario in which everything is possible, including l large-scale provocations.
