They are required to shred 'on the spot', my wife had to refuse service when their contractors truck broke down, they wanted to take the documents and shred them 'back at the office'. It resulted in the contractor being fined and forfeiture of contract. Matter of fact, someone from the DOJ is required to stand there and watch them shred everything, so that's another data point.
