Zelensky rules out election again
Ukraineâs constitution and laws do not allow for elections during wartime, the countryâs leader has reiterated
Vladimir Zelensky has stated that Ukraine must first achieve a just peace before citizens can go to the polls. The Ukrainian leaderâs presidential term expired in March 2024, but he cancelled elections due to martial law, which heâd imposed in 2022.
Zelensky addressed the issue while presenting his Internal Resilience Plan in the countryâs parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, on Tuesday.
âWe all know that the Constitution of Ukraine and the law do not permit elections during wartime, and no one in the world has demanded and does demand this from Ukraine. However, there are some people in Ukraine who may be so âhungryâ for [elections] that they want to fight within our state more than for our state. They seek political disputes in the trenches, like in film studios. This is detrimental to Ukraine,â he stated.
âFirst, Ukraine needs a just peace, and then Ukrainians will hold fair elections. We must prioritize the common interest over any personal desires,â Zelensky added.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the countryâs internal stability. This includes strengthening the front lines, bolstering the defense industry, securing the economy and financial system, enhancing the information space, ensuring justice, improving regional governance, and other critical issues.
Zelenskyâs chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, who has been described in Western media as âthe real power brokerâ in Kiev, stated that presidential elections would be held immediately after the war ends. According to Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, the next presidential elections would take place within 60 days after martial law is lifted.
Last week, Zelensky extended the period of martial law and mobilization in Ukraine until February 2025, amending the relevant legislation for the 13th time since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in February 2022.
Throughout the conflict, his government has outlawed a number of opposition parties, citing their presumed involvement in subversive activities. Several MPs have been prosecuted and jailed.
Zelensky has also been accused of consolidating power by purging government officials and military leaders he deemed as disloyal. Those included the former commander-in-chief of Ukraineâs armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny, and Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov.
In September, seven cabinet ministers and several other officials were removed from their positions. Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Olga Stefanishina were among those let go.

Afghan Asylum Seeker Climbs Alter â Rips Off the Gowns of the Famous Black Madonna of Switzerland and Puts On Her Crown â VIDEO
An Afghan asylum-seeker in Switzerland entered the Shrine of Our Lady of Einsiedeln southeast of Zurich and vandalized the famous statue of the Black Madonna.
The Afghan man climbed the alter, ripped off the clothing on the Black Madonna, took off her crown, and placed it on his head.
He wore the crown and clothing until police arrived to arrest him.
The shrine of the Black Madonna was established in the 9th Century.
After a fire in 1465 this gothic standing mother and child replaced a 9th-10th century Romanesque Seat of Wisdom Madonna lost in the flames. Baby Jesus holds a bird in his left hand. According to the local monks this eludes to an apocryphal story in which Jesus as a young child resurrected a dead bird.
In Jungian psychology the Dark Mother is an archetype that is meant to help us, in a healthy way, to integrate into our psyche all that we fear. The famous Black Madonna of Einsiedeln, whose shrine is close to where C.G. Jung taught, seems to confirm that.
Around the year 825 a German monk called Meinrad (about 799-861) became the abbot of a monastery near ZĂźrich. But soon the holy man was drawn to live the life of a hermit. So he moved into the âfinster Waldâ, i.e. the deep, ominously dark, forest, the quintessential scary place of German language tales. The only thing he took with him on this journey into everything scary was a dark statue of Mother Mary. â To this day the Madonna of Einsiedeln is referred to as Our Lady of the (Ominously) Dark Forest, as if to remind us that when we set out to face our deepest fears, it is good to be accompanied by a dark mother.
After Meinrad had spent thirty three years in the wilderness, two robbers came upon his hermitage. The saint knew their evil intentions, yet he welcomed them with open arms, gave them food and clothes. He only had one request: âWhen you have killed me, please light one candle at my feet and one at my head.â They proceeded to club him to death, but as soon as they had placed the candles according to Meinradâs wish they lit up by themselves. Then the two murderers realized that they had just killed a great saint and fled in horror. Now Meinrad had two pet black crows as his companions, who had witnessed the deed and were known to the people in the area. They flew around the evildoers, making a racket, until the men were apprehended and âbrought to justiceâ, i.e. hanged.
Maybe because of this violent end, nobody wanted to have anything to do with Meinradâs hermitage for at least 40 years. It was maintained only by the will of God until other monks were finally drawn there. By 934 enough hermits lived around Meinradâs old cell with the Black Madonna that it was decided to build a full fledged monastery.
In 948 St. Konrad, bishop of Konstanz, arrived in Einsiedeln to consecrate the chapel that housed the old hermitâs cell. The night before this solemn celebration was to take place, he had a vision of Jesus and the angels adoring the Queen of Heaven and consecrating the chapel. When the time came for the usual Sanctus prayer that contains the words: âHoly, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might ⌠blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord âŚâ they sang instead: âHoly, holy, holy God before the face of the glorious Virgin ⌠blessed is the son of Mary who comes in the name of the LordâŚâ The next day Konrad was still going to perform the usual consecration, but a voice stopped him, calling, âCease, cease, brother, the chapel has been divinely consecrated.â
To this day the Sanctus is sung in Einsiedeln the way Heaven taught it. Making such a change at the heart of the mass, required bringing the matter before the Pope. In 964 a Papal bull confirmed Konradâs vision as true and allowed the changes for Einsiedeln. The story of its âangelic consecrationâ and the many miracles that followed it, earned Einsiedeln international fame.

A Senate of Benedict Arnolds
Benedict Arnold was a well-respected and courageous officer in the American Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He fought in half a dozen battles and was central to winning the critical Battle of Saratoga in 1777, where he suffered a leg injury that sidelined him for the next two years.
They say that idle hands are the devilâs workshop, and that appears to apply to legs as well. Over the next two years, Arnoldâs inherent victim complex blossomed. Others were, he suggested, getting credit for his actions or getting promoted when he deserved such.
In 1779, Arnold would take a step that would change his life: He married Peggy Shippen, a member of a powerful loyalist family in Philadelphia. Eventually, his jealousy would get the best of him, and he contracted to betray the Americans. By at least as early as July of that year, he was giving the British information on American troop strengths, movements, and munition locations.
George Washington knew none of this and trusted Arnold and put him in charge of West Point in August 1780. One of the most important posts in the country, it was the spot from which the Americans commanded the Hudson River. Less than two weeks after receiving his command, Arnold agreed to a plan, in exchange for $20,000 ($3,500,000 today), to surrender the post to the British in September.
The surrender never occurred, however, because Arnoldâs British contact, Major John AndrĂŠ, was captured along with the plans for the betrayal. AndrĂŠ was hanged, and Arnold escaped to join the British. The British immediately commissioned him as a brigadier general in their army, but most soldiers considered him dishonorable, and many refused to follow him.
Following the war, Arnold would spend most of the rest of his life in London, where the king liked him, but many British citizens and military men despised him. In America, his name has become synonymous with treachery.
Although Arnoldâs ultimate plan never came to fruition, had it done so, it could have changed the outcome of the war. Washington said of the plan that âSuch an event must have given the American cause a dangerous, if not a fatal wound.â
And that is the crux of why betrayal is so dangerous. Itâs one thing to understand that your enemy seeks your destruction. Itâs another thing altogether when one of your own, one upon whom youâre counting on to man the ramparts, turns and lets the enemy in. It might not be fatal to your endeavor, but it could be and most certainly will endanger the mission.
Sylvester Stallone recently called Donald Trump the new George Washington. Thatâs not quite true, but like Washington, Trump is trying to carve out of an enemy-infested wilderness a great nation seeking freedom and prosperity. Also, like Washington, Trump is faced with numerous people who are theoretically on his side while, in reality, aligning with the enemy.
And who is this enemy? The Swamp. The Borg. Basically, the government that controls virtually every element of American life, from baby formula to school curriculum to college funding to healthcare to retirement, not to mention banking and justice and speechâŚif you object.
Ostensibly, Trump should have a mandate given that he won the popular vote and the Electoral College, gave the GOP a Senate majority, and kept the majority in the House. The first test of that mandate came last week, and it didnât go particularly well.
