At least 1 dead and hundreds of thousands without power as bomb cyclone slams Washington state, British Columbia

A “once in a decade” bomb cyclone is sweeping through the northwest United States and parts of Canada early Wednesday –– leaving at least one person dead and hundreds of thousands without power across Washington state, California and British Columbia.

In Seattle and neighboring cities, strong winds are tumbling trees, with some falling on houses and placing lives at risk.

In Lynnwood, north of Seattle, a woman in her 50s was killed when a large tree fell on a homeless encampment shortly after 7 p.m. PT, South County Fire Department told CNN.

More than 650,000 customers lost power in the early hours of Wednesday in Washington, while about 140,000 customers were without power in British Columbia, BC Hydro reported on its website. As of midnight PT, over 24,000 customers in California were without power.

The National Weather Service has reported notable wind gusts across the region, including off the coast of British Columbia, where winds were blowing at 101 mph at the South Brooks Buoy.

Gusts of 72 to 77 mph were recorded in Washington state, including at Cape Elizabeth on the Olympic Peninsula and at Crystal Mountain and Sunrise-Mount Rainier inland southeast of Seattle.

“It’s severe out there. Trees are coming down all over the city, with multiple falling onto homes,” the fire department in Bellevue, east of Seattle, posted in a Severe Weather Safety alert on Facebook. “If you are able, head to the lowest floor you can and stay away from windows. Do not go outside if you can avoid it.”

Videos obtained by CNN show multiple fallen trees on power lines in Lake Stevens, Snohomish County, north of Seattle, with Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue saying that there are “many trees and power lines down.”

In Maple Valley, a city southeast of Seattle, two people were rescued after a tree fell on their trailer, according to Puget Sound Fire. One patient was freed quickly, while it took firefighters an hour to extricate the second. Both patients were transferred to a nearby hospital.

An Amtrak train collided with a fallen tree near an intersection in Stanwood, north of Seattle on Tuesday night, according to CNN affiliate KIRO. The incident left the train inoperable, though none of the 47 passengers on board sustained injuries, KIRO reported. CNN reached out to Amtrak for more information.

Several school districts in western Washington will be closed or delayed on Wednesday due to the impact of the storm.

“Due to widespread power outages, fallen trees, and high winds in some areas, all school buildings will be closed on Wednesday, November 20th, and all after-school activities have been canceled,” the Eatonville School District, 60 miles south of Seattle, shared on social media.

Across western Oregon, winds of 30 to 50 mph were reported with gusts along the coast and offshore reaching over 70 mph late Tuesday. In Northern California, gusts offshore reached 60 mph with the high peaks in Humboldt reaching 80 mph.

Priest Who Allowed Sabrina Carpenter to Film ‘Feather’ Video in Church Steps Down from Duties

The priest who permitted Sabrina Carpenter to film her music video for "Feather" has been stripped of his duties.

On Monday, Nov. 18, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello was relieved of his role after church officials determined that an investigation revealed other evidence of mismanagement, per the Associated Press.

According to a statement from Bishop Robert Brennan issued by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn per the publication, Gigantiello won't have “any pastoral oversight or governance role” at his church located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y. after an investigation revealed that the priest made unauthorized financial transfers to a former top aide in New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, which is in the midst of being investigated for corruption.

“I am saddened to share that investigations conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP have uncovered evidence of serious violations of Diocesan policies and protocols at Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Annunciation Parish,” the bishop said in the statement per AP. “In order to safeguard the public trust, and to protect church funds, I have appointed Bishop Witold Mroziewski as administrator of the Parish.”

Last November, just days after Carpenter, 25, released the visual for "Feather," Gigantiello was disciplined and stripped of his administrative duties because of the video, per The New York Times.

The Diocese of Brooklyn shared a statement with the Catholic News Agency stating that Bishop Robert Brennan was "appalled at what was filmed at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Brooklyn.”

According to the outlet, the Diocese claimed that the Blessed Virgin Mary Church did not follow policy when it came to approving what gets filmed on Church property, and it was Gigantiello who gave Carpenter's team permission to film the video.

The horror-inspired visual, which has been viewed over 102 million times, features shots inside the 19th-century church and the pop star dancing around its pews and altar in a black tulle dress and veil.

During the video, Carpenter kills and witnesses the deaths of men who treated her inappropriately by catcalling and mansplaining to her, as well as taking a photo up her skirt without her consent.

The former Disney star is seemingly not in mourning as she dances around the church’s altar — adorned with memorabilia for the deceased's funerals.

The son of Norway’s crown princess is arrested on suspicion of rape, police say

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested again, this time on suspicion of rape, police said Tuesday.

Marius Borg Høiby is the stepson of the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon, and the son of Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. He has no royal title or official duties.

Borg Høiby was arrested late Monday in Oslo on a preliminary charge of having had “sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act.” A preliminary charge comes before a formal charge and allows authorities to detain suspects during an investigation.

Police did not say when the alleged rape occurred, but only that “the victim must have been unable to resist the act.” Norwegian media said Borg Høiby denied the accusation.

Hege Salomon, the lawyer for the woman who was allegedly raped, said “she is having a hard time.” She told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that police, not the woman, had brought the case. The woman was not identified.

The royal palace had no comment, the news agency NTB said.

On Aug. 4, police officers responded to a disturbance in downtown Oslo and briefly detained Borg Høiby. He faced preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage and was released. Details were unclear but police said there was “a relationship between the suspect and the victim.”

More preliminary charges have since been filed against Borg Høiby, including violating several restraining orders and driving without a valid driver’s license. In all, the cases involve four women and one man.

The case was top news in Norway, where the royals are popular.

Borg Høiby, 27, lives with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.

Norway’s future queen made headlines in 2001 when she married Haakon because she was a single mother who had lived a freewheeling life with a companion who had been convicted on drug charges.
