My sister and I were both Rainbow girls - age 13 through 18 and went up through the ranks to "Worthy Advisor". I was on the state Color Guard. We lived in a small town - population 8,000 - 10,000 during those years. My Dad (huge patriot, decorated WWII vet and proud of it) was a Mason and was Rainbow Dad throughout those years. A Mason is required to be present if the doors are open. Like you, we just did charitable events as did the Masons. Part of the ritual was opening the Bible and placing it on the center alter. We prayed to God in our meetings. We did memory work. I remember all the Masons well. They were all good men - business owners, town leaders, church leaders. We were active in the Southern Baptist Church. As a kid, I just saw Rainbow meetings as just another church-like service. My brothers were both DeMolay. Nothing at all sinister in our masonic community in our town. When all the hubbub started coming out about the Masons being a demonic cult, my Father was blown away, offended, and denied it vehemently. He went to his grave believing that Masons were all good men.
