On May 21, 1981, President Ronald Reagan debuted a new podium at a State Dinner for West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. The wooden lectern was decorated with a striking gold eagle and was brought to the White House by Joseph Canzeri, aide to former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. The podium quickly became a showpiece at White House dinners and events in the State Dining Room. It was used by presidents and their guests until the early 2000s.
In 2004, the patriotic podium was donated to The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California, and a replica was made for the White House. Since then, an identical eagle lectern has been used at State Dinners in the State Dining Room.
