Ukrainian troops retreating in Kursk Region – WSJ

The US newspaper claims that Russian forces are advancing non-stop, having the upper hand in terms of manpower and weaponry

The Ukrainian military has been steadily losing ground in Russia’s Kursk Region as Moscow’s forces have intensified their advances in recent weeks, the Wall Street Journal has reported. The US newspaper claims that the Kremlin is seeking to flush Kiev’s troops out of its internationally recognized territory before US President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated on January 20.

Ukraine launched its incursion in Kursk Region in early August, with senior officials in Kiev expressing hope that it would help slow down Russian offensives elsewhere. However, Moscow’s forces have nevertheless been advancing steadily in the Donetsk People’s Republic in recent months.

On Monday, the WSJ reported that hostilities in the Russian region had reached an intensity unseen in most other parts of the front line. The publication claimed that, in recent weeks, Moscow’s forces had retaken nearly half the territory it lost to Kiev’s military earlier this year.

The media outlet quoted a Ukrainian battalion commander, identified by his call sign ‘Geniy’, as saying thatRussian troops were “assaulting all the time – morning, day, night.” He estimated that, in the area where his 47th Brigade is operating,Moscow has approximately three times as many men and six times as many kamikaze dronesas Kiev. Another soldier told the newspaper that theUkrainians were outnumbered roughly ten-to-onesoutheast of the city of Sudzha.

According to the WSJ,Moscow’s heavy glide bombs and an inability to use Starlink in Russian territory had further compounded the Ukrainian military’s plightin Kursk Region. The satellite-based internet systemhas long been seen as acornerstone of the Ukrainian frontline communication systemelsewhere.

Low morale among Ukrainian troops deployed to Kursk Region is another problem, the media outlet claims. Vyachyslav Khomenko, a platoon commander with Ukraine’s 21st Mechanized Brigade, told reporters thathis unit was mostly made up of inexperienced and unmotivated conscripts. He added that he had to give a pep talk to his “tired” men every now and then.

Some Ukrainiantroops are reportedly questioning the rationale behind the entire operation on Russian soil at a time when Kiev is rapidly losing ground in Donbass.

The WSJ quoted battalion commander ‘Geniy’ as concluding that theRussians would “eventually push us back,” given their superior “power and more resources.”

Earlier this week, El Pais reported thatUkraine had prioritizedholding onto Kursk Region over pushing back Russian advances in Donbass.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said this month that=Ukrainian “losses [in Kursk Region]are colossal,” exceeding 30,000 casualties.

It sure sounds like they are continuing the war, to continue the war, regardless of how many of their soldiers die or how much equipment is destroyed. Probably Bidan's orders to make life difficult for incoming Trump.

State corruption may leave Ukrainians freezing – Sunday Times

The government reportedly withheld funding for an international project designed to protect the country’s grid

Ukrainians may befacing a “deadly winter freeze” because alleged corruption in the government has stalled work aimed at protecting the country’s electricity substations from airstrikes, the Sunday Times has reported. The Ukrainian leadership previously accused Russia of destroying 80% of the country’s energy infrastructure.Moscow has stated that it only targets facilities that supply defense manufacturing.

Ateam of British, American, German, and Japanese engineers developed and tested concrete structuresthat would protect Ukraine’s energy grid from Russian strikes, the Sunday Times wrote on Saturday, citing sources. The work was reportedlyfinished in February, with the estimated cost of the project standing at €1.4 billion ($1.47 billion).

Nine months later, however, Vladimir Zelensky’s government has not delivered the bunkers, the Sunday Times wrote.

The official who oversaw the project, Mustafa Nayyem of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development, resigned in June, claiming that Kiev was creating artificial obstacles for his agency’s operations.

According to the newspaper, Nayyem’s teamsuspects that the construction of the bunkers was delayed because bribes were not paid to officials in the prime minister’s office.

The outlet also quoted contractors as saying that the necessary funding has not been provided and thatthe structures are far from complete.

=The bunkers would have provided “third-level protection” for the electricity substations. Ukraine’s energy system is currently relying on British-supplied gabion baskets, or rock-filled cages, and on large concrete protective arches above ground as “first” and “second level protection.”

Ukrainians must prepare for a winter that will be more difficult than the last, Energy Minister German Galushchenko warned in August.

The following month,Zelensky claimed that Russia destroyed 80% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. He made the statement while seeking the West’s permission to use missiles provided by Kiev’s allies for long-range strikes into Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities are in retaliation for similar attacks from Kiev. In April,Putin also stated that Russia targets Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to “demilitarize” the country, as the strikes affect its defense-industrial complex.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, the EU and US have provided tens of billions of dollars in financial, military, and humanitarian assistance to Kiev, according to official data.

Government graft has been consistently named by observers as a major problem for Ukraine since it gained independence in the 1990s. Last year, Transparency International ranked it 104th among 180 nations in its corruption perception index.

Pentagon InspectorGeneral Robert Storch reportedearlier this monththat “corruption continues to complicate Ukraine’s efforts to achieve its EU and NATO aspirations,”particularly due to multiple scandals in the Defense Ministry.

Zelensky claimed in July that his government had made progress in tackling the problem.

The leadership doesn't even care if the people freeze to death in winter, all because of greed.

(Sounds like the US and Allies have recruited big time news outlets to report Ukraine is a failure over the weekend.)

Marco Rubio is ‘unquestionably qualified’ to serve in Trump’s Cabinet, says Democrat Adam Schiff

While opposed to some of President-elect Trump’s Cabinet picks, Sen.-elect Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) says he is “strongly inclined” to vote yes on Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) confirmation as secretary of state.

(This is how we know Rubio is a bad pick and will probably be removed, if confirmed in short order. Benz explained why Rubio is the worst pick yesterday on Bongino show)
