Reward offered in Darlington County, South Carolina for information on dog set on fire, abandoned
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for setting a dog on fire in South Carolina earlier this month.
The Case: According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, on November 9, 2024, a local emergency medical responder found a terrier-type dog at an intersection. The dog, suffering from multiple burns, was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic where they are currently receiving extensive medical care. It is believed the dog was set on fire before being abandoned.
Animal Cruelty: Securing the serious attention and engagement of law enforcement, prosecutors and residents in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the whole community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and many other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.
“I cannot fathom how someone could intentionally set a dog on fire, or the pain and suffering this poor dog endured. This incomprehensible cruelty must be met with justice,” said Janell Gregory, South Carolina state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “We’re incredibly grateful to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office for fully investigating this crime, and we hope the reward leads to the capture of those responsible for this appalling act.”
