New York Democrat warns Hochul could lose to Republican challenger in 2026

She may be in denial about the depth of her vulnerabilities as a Democratic nominee.A Democratic incumbent who is less popular in New York than Donald Trump is in grave danger of losing to a Republican in 2026–an outcome not seen in 30 years," Torres wrote in a post on X

Dig Deeper

Rep, Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., warned that New York Governor Kathy Hochul could lose a Republican in 2026 if she seeks re-election.

“Let’s avoid repeating history and avoid sleepwalking toward impending disaster and defeat,” Torres wrote on X on Friday. “’Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’”

Torres, who has represented the Bronx since 2021,referred to Hochul, as the "new Joe Biden."

"Kathy Hochul is the new Joe Biden. She may be in denial about the depth of her vulnerabilities as a Democratic nominee. A Democratic incumbent who is less popular in New York than Donald Trump is in grave danger of losing to a Republican in 2026–an outcome not seen in 30 years," Torres, a potential challenger to Hochul, wrote in a post on X.

“Why did Donald Trump make greater gains in New York than he did elsewhere in America?” he asked via X. “The reasons might have something to do with the poverty of governance in New York,” he wrote in a separated X.

On Monday, Torres wrote a letter to Hochulblasting the "bureaucrat in DOC [Department of Correction] who authorized the early release" of Ramon Rivera, an eight-time criminal who went on to kill 3 people in New York City after his release. He also wrote to New York Mayor Eric Adams."Those who cannot be entrusted with public safety should no longer be employed by the people of New York," he said, calling for the firing of whoever allowed Ramon back on the streets.

My Position on LGBTQ+ Rights

As a child of the Bronx who grew up in public housing, I was often too scared to come out of the closet in my youth. Now, as the first openly LGBTQ+ Afro-Latino Member of Congress, I feel the weight of history on my shoulders. I know firsthand the discrimination members of the LGBTQ+ community face, and am determined to make positive change for my community.

We are closer than ever before to realizing the full vision of equality in America, but we must continue to combat LGBTQ+ discrimination with federal action. Millions of Americans still live in fear of losing their jobs, homes, or livelihoods because of who they are and whom they love. My lived experience as a gay Black man from the Bronx motivates me to fight every day until we are fully equal in the eyes of the law.

I’m proud that my first bill to pass the House advances the fight for full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. It requires financial institutions to compile and maintain certain data on applications for credit from LGBTQ-owned businesses, which codifies the term “LGBTQ-owned business” into federal law. Collecting this data is crucial for identifying business development needs and opportunities for LGBTQ-owned businesses, which add over $1.7 trillion to the U.S. economy each year.

Elon Musk floats buying MSNBC, but he’s not the only billionaire who may be interested

Analysis by Brian Stelter, CNN 4:16 PM EST, Mon November 25, 2024

(Of Course Brian Stelterone of the worst that contributed greatly to the destruction of CNN)

Elon Musk has called MSNBC “the utter scum of the Earth.” He has said the channel “peddles puerile propaganda.” Just a few days ago he said, “MSNBC is going down.” And now he is posting memes about buying the channel.

Conventional wisdom holds that Musk — the world’s richest man and key Donald Trump ally — and his friends are just joking. But Musk’s posts are adding to the anxiety that MSNBC staffers are feeling about the reelection of Donald Trump and the recently announced spinoff of Comcast’s cable channels.

I spent Sunday on the phone with sources to gauge what might be going on.

I learned that more than one benevolent billionaire with liberal bonafides has already reached outto acquaintances at MSNBC to express interest in buying the cable channel. The inbound interest was reassuring, one of the sources said, since it showed that oppositional figures like Musk (who famously bought Twitter to blow it up) would not be the only potential suitors.

But contrary toclaims that Trump’s allies are posting on X, Comcast has not put a “for sale” sign on MSNBC’s door. If Comcast chief Brian Roberts really wanted to sell the liberal cable news channel, he could have done that already. Instead, he is moving MSNBC and a half dozen other cable channels into “SpinCo,” a pure-play cable programming company. The hope is that spinning off the pressured-but-profitable channels will boost shares of both Comcast and “SpinCo.” (Comcast announced it themselves, it’s not gossip, like you spread.)

Comcast says the transaction will take about a year. At that point, could someone swoop in with a bid for MSNBC? It’s complicated. “SpinCo” is structured as a tax-free spinoff, and immediately divesting an asset would have tax implications that could forestall any such sale.

“Typically, we would expect a two-year waiting period before any potential further strategic action by the SpinCo to preserve the tax-free nature of the spin although we believe there are scenarios where industry consolidation including SpinCo could happen earlier,” analyst Benjamin Swinburne of Morgan Stanley wrote in a note to investors last week. (Morgan Stanley is a financial advisor to Comcast.)

Plus, “SpinCo” executives may well conclude that offloading MSNBC is not in the best interest of shareholders, since the channel’s loyal audience is a form of leverage in negotiations with cable distributors. Executives involved with the spinoff say they intend to be predators, not prey – buying new channels, not selling off old ones bit by bit.

Selling MSNBC to win favor with the president-elect is simply not the plan. I have sensed quite a bit of enthusiasm at MSNBC about “SpinCo,” actually, because the new structure should allow for more investment into MSNBC, CNBC and the other brands.

The ‘media capture’ model

While Musk and his friends trade memes and crack each other up, there’s a serious undercurrent here. It’s known as “media capture.” This happened in Hungary when far-right prime minister Viktor Orbán’s “close allies also purchased private television and radio outlets to convert them into pro-government outlets,” CNN reported earlier this month.

“Media capture” is a subset of what Protect Democracy executive director Ian Bassin calls “autocratic capture,” where “the government uses its power to enforce loyalty from the private sector.” On a recent episode of Vanity Fair’s “Inside the Hive,” Bassin said “I think we are in danger of seeing that happen across the American marketplace in all sorts of sectors.”

Gábor Scheiring, a former member of the Hungarian parliament, wrote in a new essay for Politico Magazine that Orbán “consolidated media control through centralized propaganda, market pressure and loyal billionaires.” In the US, he wrote, “liberal-minded billionaires should not sit idly by as they did in Hungary, watching the right take over the media.”

Harris lost to Trump. She may have one last chance to defy him.

The vice president is prepared to provide tiebreaking votes in critical judicial appointments as Biden works to push through confirmations.

Nov. 19, 2024, 4:07 PM EST (Prayer for her planes to be grounded)

Fresh from a devastating loss to Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris may now head to Capitol Hill to defy him in what could be her last major act in office. As President Joe Biden attempts to advance a crush of judicial confirmations before he leaves the White House, Democrats are bracing for the possibility of close calls in the process as they ambitiously seek to top the 234 judges Trump securedduring his first term.

That’s where Harris would come in. As the president of the Senate,Harris wields the constitutional power to provide a tie-breaking vote. Democrats’ slim majority has made Harris a go-to on this procedure throughout Biden’s tenure, having broken a record last year for casting the most decisive votes of any vice president in history.

It is an issue so important to the president — and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. — that it came up last week when Harris and Biden met for lunch in their first post-election meeting, three sources with knowledge of the meeting said.

“This is something they want to clear the decks on,” a senior aide to Harris said. “She will definitely be available for any tie votes,” a second senior aide said. “It is a big focus,” a third person familiar with internal dynamics said.

With Harris leaving Tuesday for a respite in Hawaii, the votes aren’t expected to come up in the Senate until December, one of the sources said.

A senior Harris aide said the vice president delayed her trip to California and Hawaii in the event that she would be needed for votes in the Senate to confirm judges. Harris was supposed to leave this past weekend but instead left Tuesday with the intention of returning to D.C. for needed votes. That aide, as well as a person familiar with planning, said the team determined she was not needed in D.C. right now but to expect a major battle over judicial nominees in December.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on Tuesday said she had been told that Harris would be available to break judicial ties if needed. She would not say if she had personally spoken to Harris about it.“The goal is to fill every judicial nomination that we can," Warren said.

Schumer has been vocal about getting through these confirmations before Biden leaves office, several people with knowledge of the conversations said.He has made clear he would use the lame-duck session— the period between the election and when the new president is inaugurated — to confirm more judges, as Republicans did in late 2020.

“We are going to use the lame duck to confirm judges. And we’re going to do everything we can to get as many judges done as possible, trying to overcome the Republican obstruction,” Schumer told NBC News in a recent interview.

It’s something that’s already irking Trump, who signaled that Republicans should block any attempts by Democrats to further their judicial agenda. “The Democrats are trying to stack the Courts with Radical Left Judges on their way out the door. Republican Senators need to Show Up and Hold the Line — No more Judges confirmed before Inauguration Day!” Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday.

But Republicans — who famously pushed through a Trump Supreme Court appointment just one week before the 2020 election — do not have the power to stop it.GOP senators can slow the process down, but Democrats need a simple majority to overcome any obstruction and confirm judges. A senior Biden administration official working on judicial nominations noted that in the 2020 lame-duck session, after Trump had lost the election, Senate Republicans continued to confirm his judges.

Confirming more judges is the top priority for Schumer and Senate Democrats before they relinquish power to the new Congress, which will be controlled by Republicans in both chambers.“We’ll confirm as many judges as possible in the lame duck,” Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said. (How did this idiot get into the Senate?)

If they’re all confirmed, that would bring Biden’s total to 223 federal judges. “We could exceed the 234,” the official said. “This is not about beating Trump’s numbers(radical judges). This is about getting good people on the bench. Is 235 within the realm of possibility? It is. But that’s not what’s driving it.”

A Senate Democratic aide was heartened by the notion that Harris would be on call to break ties. “Hope she’s not needed,” the aide said. “But glad that’s an option while Dems have the majority.”

Biden will attend Trump's inauguration in January, White House says(Please Don’t)

By Kristin Brown, Kathryn Watson

November 25, 2024 / 5:22 PM EST / CBS News

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden will attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, the White House said Monday.

Before the election, Mr. Biden said he would attend, regardless of who won. Trump did not attend Mr. Biden's 2021 inauguration, which took place two weeks after Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol ahead of the certification of the election results. Trump was the first president in more than 150 years to not attend his successor's inauguration.

Aboard Air Force One on Monday, White House spokesman Andrew Bates confirmed that Mr. Biden and the first lady will attend the inauguration.

"The president promised that he would attend the inauguration of whomever won the election," Bates said."He and the first lady are going to honor that promise and attend the inauguration. He views that as an important demonstration of commitment to our democratic values, and to honoring the will of the people, as we continue to provide an orderly and effective transition."

White House chief of staff Jeff Zients has met multiple times with incoming White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Bates said.

But the president-elect's team has not yet signed critical agreements with the Biden administration to officially move the transition forward, holding up the security clearance process. Bates said the Trump transition team has not entered into agreements with the White House or the General Services Administration.
