The Pakistani capital of Islamabad has been locked down as supporters of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan have been arriving in droves from all over the country to demand his release from jail.
Khan was toppled in April 2022 by the first no-confidence vote in the country’s history, reportedly on request of the US because he was too friendly to Russia. He has since been imprisoned on an ever-changing series of charges. Rejecting the allegations as politically motivated, Khan has called on his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to assemble in the capital.
“These are not ordinary times. These people have been yearning for a Pakistan where justice and the rule of law is supreme, and the state serves the people, not the elites. This is exactly what Imran Khan promises. Hence, Imran Khan, being their only hope, must be released, and this is their final demand,” the PTI said in a statement on Monday.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government has accused Khan of a “well-thought out conspiracy” and vowed to arrest every protester who tries to get into the capital. The “red zone” of Islamabad, home to all the parliamentary and government buildings, has been “completely sealed off” by barricades made of shipping containers, The Guardian reported on Monday.
The authorities have blocked roads in many parts of Pakistan and deployed tens of thousands of police and militia, aiming to prevent the PTI convoys from reaching the capital. Mobile internet and messaging services such as WhatsApp have been blocked in the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Russia and Iran complete de-dollarization – central bank
The two countries have completely shifted to trade in their national currencies, according to the Iranian government lender
Russia and Iran have abandoned the use of the US dollar in bilateral trade, shifting to their national currencies, Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Governor Mohammad-Reza Farzin has stated, according to local media reports.
The CBI chief made the remarks at the 11th Conference on Modern Banking and Payment Systems in Tehran on Monday. He said the move was part of a plan to counter “unjust sanctions.”
“We have entered into a currency agreement with Russia and abandoned the dollar. Now we only trade in rubles and rials,” Farzin was quoted as saying by Fars News.
He also revealed that the two nations’ financial authorities have agreed on the exchange rate to be used for foreign trade transactions.
Iran and Russia, both subject to US sanctions, first announced plans to use their respective national currencies instead of the greenback in mutual trade in July 2022.

Warren Buffett To Make $1.14 Billion Donation Of Berkshire Shares To Four Family Foundations
As is usually the case, Warren Buffett is making a shrewd financial move and getting praised as a philanthropist for it.
This time he's not lending a vote of confidence to a struggling U.S. bank by dealing himself preferred stock, he's making a $1.14 billion donation of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shares to four family foundations, according to Bloomberg.
The investing legend plans to convert 1,600 Berkshire Class A shares into 2.4 million Class B shares, gifting 1.5 million to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and 300,000 each to his children's foundations: Sherwood, Howard G. Buffett, and NoVo.
Buffett’s Berkshire Class A shares have dropped to 206,363, a nearly 57% decline since his 2006 pledge. In 2010, Buffett, along with Bill and Melinda Gates, launched the Giving Pledge, committing to donate his fortune during his lifetime or after.

Politico calls for Biden to issue commutation of Hunter Biden sentence in act of presidential 'mercy'
"Particularly in the wake of Trump’s victory, Biden is on strong ground — at a minimum — to commute any sentence of imprisonment for his son Hunter before he leaves office."
Politico argued on Monday that President Joe Biden should swiftly issue a commutation for his son Hunter Biden because Republicans “pressured” the Department of Justice to prosecute the younger Biden and that doing so would be an important act of "mercy."
Ankush Khardori, a senior writer at the outlet, made the argument for Biden to commute his son’s sentence, saying that it would be “an important show of mercy" as Biden is leaving office.
“Thanks to President Joe Biden’s Justice Department, Donald Trump is headed to the White House, and his son Hunter might be headed to prison. And believe it or not, the drama will intensify shortly,” Khardori wrote.
“In a matter of weeks, the younger Biden is set to be sentenced in two different criminal courts. On Dec. 12, he will appear in federal court in Delaware, where he was convicted over the summer of buying a gun in 2018 while addicted to drugs. Several days later, he is set to appear before a federal judge in Los Angeles for sentencing on tax fraud charges, which he pleaded guilty to in September just as a trial was about to get underway.”
The Politico writer noted that people are still wondering if “Biden will pardon his son,” adding, “The question raises a host of considerations — legal, political, practical and historic — that cannot be easily disentangled or reconciled. But, in the end, should he do it?”
Khardori argued that Biden is “on strong ground — at a minimum — to commute any sentence of imprisonment for his son Hunter before he leaves office. Not a pardon exactly, but an important show of mercy.” He added that this would spare Hunter “potentially years behind bars and avoid further pain for the Biden family.”
On Sept. 5, 2024, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking for Biden, said the president would neither pardon Hunter nor commute his sentence. She was asked if Hunter changing his plea to guilty would affect how the president felt about the case.
The press secretary responded, “no comment” to that query but said, “It’s no, it’s still no,” when asked if Biden would issue a pardon for his son.
“Can you comment on whether a commutation would be on or off the table?” another reporter asked. “That's also no,” Jean-Pierre said, adding that she didn’t “have anything to say” about whether Hunter’s ongoing judicial battle had anything to do with his father’s decision not to run for a second term as president. Hunter Biden had pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles court that day to nine tax evasion charges, three of which were felonies.
While Politico acknowledged that Biden previously said no to a pardon or a commutation, the outlet suggested Biden “may have good reason to change his mind — not least of all, because he was effectively ousted as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee and now must watch as Trump, who lies more prolifically and [has] corrupted the pardon process more egregiously than any president in modern American history, will return to the White House.”
Khardori wrote that “the cases against Hunter Biden probably would not have been brought against anyone else” but insists he is not trying “to excuse any of Hunter Biden’s conduct.” He argued that “[t]he reason we are here is because Trump and his Republican allies effectively — and successfully — pressured Joe Biden’s own Justice Department to prosecute his son.”

Indian students have brazenly admitted to rorting Australia’s visa system through dodgy “ghost colleges” that leave them “free to work until they get residency”.
The Albanese government announced in August that around 150 so-called “ghost colleges” had been shut down and another 140 issued warning notices by the regulator.
Ghost colleges or “visa factories”, which offer no real courses but enable fake international students to come to Australia for work, have long plagued the troubled vocational education sector. Labor earlier this year announced a renewed crackdown, promising “shonks and dodgy operators” would be weeded out.
