This week, Beijing expressed anger and threatened retaliation over several developments: U.S. restrictions on chip exports, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, and a visit by Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, to Hawaii.

Beijing should remember that the U.S. is a sovereign nation, fully within its rights to impose export restrictions, provide support and weapons to Taiwan and to host visiting heads of state. Trump will undoubtedly remind Xi Jinping of this fact.

China has vowed “resolute countermeasures” in response to a U.S. arms sale to Taiwan, worth an estimated $385 million, for spare parts and support for F-16 jets and radars. Three Dead in US After Contracting Tick Bite Disease

Three U.S. residents have died from Rocky Mountain spotted fever — a severe and fatal tickborne disease commonly found in northern Mexico and around the U.S. border, the Centers for Disease Control announced Thursday.

In total, six Californians contracted the disease from July 2023 to January 2024, which is spread by the brown dog tick and free-roaming dogs.

The six patients’ ages ranged from 17 months to 65 years old, and all but one were female.

Each patient had traveled to or lived in Tecate, Mexico, within 8 days of illness onset, and each had come in contact with a dog, the CDC said.

Incredibly, Garland appointed the same federal prosecutor who sabotaged the Hunter case, Robert Weiss, to be special counsel.

The pardon absolves Hunter of any possible drug involvement, sex trafficking, lobbying, bribery, foreign agent or other crimes involving Ukraine and several other foreign governments or companies including China. The start date of 2014 coincides with the year Hunter joined the board of the Ukraine energy firm Burisma in an influence peddling scheme alleged to have involved Joe Biden.

Canada’s economy continues to see a substantial financial drain as over $12 billion was sent abroad last year in remittances, primarily by immigrants supporting families in their home countries.

This represents a striking 50% increase compared to 2013 when the figure was just over $8 billion, according to data from the World Bank.

Over the same decade, remittances flowing into Canada have shrunk. In 2013, inward remittances amounted to $1.7 billion; by 2023, that figure fell to $1.2 billion—a 29% decline.

The disparity makes Canada a net exporter of wealth through remittances, a trend that has implications for the domestic economy.

Relative to GDP, Canada sends 33% more in remittances than the United States annually, making it the 15th highest country for outgoing remittances as a share of GDP worldwide. A significant portion of these funds are sent to India, as well as the Philippines and China.
