The Energy and Mines Ministry said the 330-megawatt capacity CTE Antonio Guiteras power plant suffered a failure earlier this morning but did not provide details.

"At 2:08 this morning, the Electrical System, SEN, was disconnected when the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant went out due to the automatic tripping. The restoration process is underway," the ministry wrote on X.

This is the second failure at the Antonio Guiteras power plant in months. In mid-October, the plant, located about 62 miles east of Havana, suffered a similar failure. Then, weeks later, a hurricane knocked out power across the country.

A United States sheriff’s office on the border with Canada has become one of the first to implement iris biometric identification technology with patrol vehicles.

The Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced that the Inmate Identification and Recognition System (IRIS.) would be deployed within a patrol vehicle. Previously, the Niagara County Sheriff’s use of the technology had been limited to its county jail. The IRIS is supplied by BI2 Technologies.

“Whether it’s within our Correctional Facility or in the field, the I.R.I.S. helps to ensure a greatly reduced chance of misidentification,” Sheriff Filicetti said. “Now, a Deputy, at a glance, will be able to see if a suspect is within the I.R.I.S. database, and may respond accordingly to any information that search reveals,” he added.

Located in the far west of New York state, Niagara County is home to the popular natural attraction of Niagara Falls and borders the Canadian province of Ontario. B12 Technologies has worked with the National Sheriffs’ Association on a number of biometric identification projects for over a decade.

The lengthy partnership has resulted in more than two-thirds of the 3,100 sheriffs’ offices asking to join IRIS. In addition, last summer, BI2 Technologies offered sheriffs in 31 U.S. border countries free access to its iris biometric-based Mobile Offender Recognition & Information System (MORIS).

A second Alberta town has voted to pass a bylaw to ensure that all public buildings, crosswalks, and flags remain “neutral” on social or political issues.

The Town of Barrhead published the results of its plebiscite vote on Monday. A total of 1,145 votes were cast, 653 (57%) for and 492 (43%) against.

The Neutral Space Bylaw mandates that crosswalks are only painted in standard white striped patterns between two parallel lines. The bylaw also states that only national flags, the provincial flag of Alberta, or the Town of Barrhead flags are flown on public property.

“There will be no decorations on town crosswalks or displaying of flags supporting political, social, or religious movements or commercial entities,” reads the bylaw. “No grandfathering of any existing crosswalks or flags that contravene the new bylaw will be authorized.”

The federal government is launching a global online ad campaign to warn asylum-seekers that making a claim in Canada will be difficult in an effort to dissuade others from doing so amid an onslaught of filings.

The ads mark another shift in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration as it attempts to save face while public opinion is plummeting, much of which has to do with previous immigration policy stances and its contribution to the housing shortage.

OP-ED: Parents in every province deserve as many school choices as possible

This week, the Smith government in Alberta will likely pass Bill 27, which requires schools to get signed permission from parents or guardians prior to any lessons on human sexuality, gender identity or sexual orientation.

It’s a sensible move. The government is proactively ensuring that students are in these classes because their parents want them there. Given the sensitive nature of these topics, for everyone’s sake it makes sense to ensure parental buy-in at the outset.

Unfortunately, many school trustees don’t agree. A recent resolution passed by the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) calls on the Smith government to maintain the status quo where parents are assumed to have opted in to these lessons unless they contact the school and opt their children out. Apparently, the ASBA thinks parents can’t be trusted to make the right decisions for their children on this issue.

This ASBA resolution is, in fact, a good example of the reflexive opposition by government school trustees to parental rights. They don’t want parents to take control of their children’s education, especially in sensitive areas. Fortunately, the Alberta government rebuffed ASBA’s demands and this attempt to abolish Bill 27 will likely fall on deaf ears.

However, there’s an even better safeguard available to Alberta parents—school choice. Out of all Canadian provinces, Alberta offers the most school choice. Not only does Alberta have a fully funded separate (Catholic) school system, it also provides between 60 and 70 per cent operational funding to accredited independent schools. In addition, Alberta is the only province in Canada to allow fully funded charter schools. And Alberta subsidizes homeschooling parents. Simply put, parents who are dissatisfied with the government school system have plenty of options—more than parents in any other province. This means Alberta parents can vote with their feet. The Liberal government’s controversial Online Harms Act will be split into two separate bills, Justice Minister Arif Virani has confirmed.

The sections of the bill dealing with child pornography and child sexual exploitation and establishing a Digital Safety Commission to regulate tech platforms will now proceed as their own bill. The provisions dealing with hate crimes and online hate speech, which have been subject to significant alarm from civil liberties advocates, will be in their own bill as well.

“These bills will proceed on different tracks. We are putting our emphasis and prioritization and our time and efforts on the first portion of the bill, which deals with child sex predators,” said Virani in a Wednesday scrum.

The bill’s splitting follows legal experts urging the Liberals to separate the act into two or three separate bills.

The University of Winnipeg allows all students to enter and enjoy their BIPoC Lounge – so long as they don’t identify as white.

Inside the University of Winnipeg’s Bulman Student Centre, the university’s students’ association opens its BIPoC Lounge everyday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to serve as a safe space exclusively for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, or as a person of colour.

The University of Winnipeg Student Association claims that the BIPoC Lounge is a dedicated space for people of colour to “learn and heal through their understandings and experiences as a BIPoC.”

A list of the lounge’s rules posted at the entrance clearly states that students who do not identify as Black, Indigenous, or as a person of colour do not meet the requirements to enter the lounge and are not welcome inside. Continue…

The bulk of Canadians don’t think employers should be selecting candidates for jobs based on cultural or ethnic backgrounds, according to a new Leger poll for the Association of Canadian Studies.

The poll found that 57% of Canadians disagree with diversity, equity and inclusion hiring practices, a sentiment that is surprisingly even more pronounced in Canada than in the United States.

Walmart was the latest to join some of the world’s largest corporations in rolling back its DEI policies amid a growing public backlash.

The company joins the likes of Harley-Davidson and John Deere which have already done away with race-based hiring.

“There is clearly pushback on DEI approaches that extend to hiring practices and support for employment equity (affirmative action in the US) appears to be softening both in Canada perhaps more so than it is in the United States,” reads the survey.

According to the survey, only 28% of Canadians support equity hiring, compared to 36% of those who support it south of the border.

Additionally, only 46% of Americans said they outright oppose it.

Certain political parties have also scrapped DEI hiring, most notably Alberta’s governing United Conservatives. The provincial party has explicitly endorsed eliminating such practices regarding public service and Crown corporation employment. Continue…

Mississauga raises Christian Heritage Month banner over the city for the first time

The City of Mississauga raised the Christian banner in the city centre for the first time, after the municipality recently declared Christian Heritage Month.

Seats quickly filled, and many had to stand during the ceremony. On Wednesday, around 100 community members, including city councillors, the city’s mayor, Carolyn Parrish, and Christians of various denominations and non-denominations, attended the historic flag-raising event.

The ceremony leading up to the flag-raising was filled with praise music, Christmas carols, speeches and prayer led by Christian pastors and priests.

In November, city councillors unanimously passed a motion brought forward by Councilor Brad Butt to declare December “Christian Heritage Month.”

Attendees, including Parrish, told True North how “diverse” the Christian community is as members of the Coptic Orthodox community, Catholics, evangelicals, and people of many ethnicities attended.

Butt told True North at the event that the showing underscored and affirmed the council’s unanimous decision to proclaim the month to celebrate the heritage of Christianity in Canada.

“It just shows that the community is completely united around this and that this was a very important recognition for our city,” Butt said.

According to Statistics Canada, in 2021, nearly half, 49.5%, of Mississauga’s 717,961 residents identified as Christians. Continue…

Saskatchewan will soon be the first Canadian province to officially declare December as Christian Heritage Month and Calgary, Alberta’s largest city, will do the same.

The Saskatchewan government made the proclamation official on December 4 in a document with the stamped royal seal of the province’s Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Alana Ross. An announcement from the government is expected in the coming days.

Molly Banerjei, the CEO of the Canadian organization dedicated to getting all governments from all levels to declare December in recognition of Christianity, welcomed the news of Saskatchewan being the first province to recognize Christianity’s importance in Canada.

Several Polish lawmakers want to criminalize the propaganda of the ideology that drove Ukrainian nationalists, citing the genocidal massacres of ethnic Poles by Stepan Bandera’s followers during WWII.

Between 1943 and 1945, Bandera’s Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) murdered at least 60,000 ethnic Poles in the regions of Volynia and Eastern Galicia. Some estimates put the death toll as high as 120,000, and the Polish government considers the massacre a genocide.

On Tuesday, two members of the Polish parliament proposed adding UPA and Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) ideology to the list of proscribed beliefs, which currently includes fascism, national-socialism and communism.

“Polish politicians want to condemn the ideology of the struggle for Ukraine’s independence,” Ukrainian lawmaker Vladimir Vyatrovich posted on Facebook on Wednesday.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) has announced that they’ve launched a legal challenge in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia against recent modifications to the province’s medical privacy laws.

Recent amendments to the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) were enacted within the government’s budget law, granting the government the ability to access private medical records without patient consent.

Legal representatives affiliated with the JCCF are representing a diverse group including Dr. Chris Milburn, Dr. Aris Lavranos, and the Nova Scotia Civil Liberties Association.

“No one in Nova Scotia should lose control over who gets to see their private medical information,” lead counsel James Manson said. “That information should stay between them and their health care team.”

Government officials stated that the amendments to PHIA were made to improve health system management, allocate resources effectively, and develop electronic health records for Nova Scotians.

But the JCCF argues that these purposes could be achieved without compromising privacy by using anonymized data instead of identifiable medical records, and that the forced disclosure of personal medical information without consent violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically Sections 7 and 8, which protect personal security, liberty, and against unreasonable searches or seizures.

“Once formally commenced, it is expected that the application will take several months to get to a hearing,” they stated.
