Former British soldier Daniel Khalife convicted of spying for Iran

A former soldier in the British army who escaped from prison while awaiting trial has been found guilty of spying for Iran.

Daniel Khalife, 23, was on Thursday convicted of delivering a large amount of restricted and classified material for people linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including the names of special forces officers.

Khalife, wearing a blue shirt and pale trousers, calmly replaced his glasses as the verdicts were read out and did not show any emotion.

He escaped from Wandsworth Prison in London in September 2023 while awaiting trial by tying himself to the undercarriage of a delivery van, leading to a brief nationwide manhunt.

In 2021, Khalife took a photo of a handwritten list of 15 serving British soldiers, including some in the special forces, having been sent an internal spreadsheet of promotions in June of that year. Prosecutors believe he sent the list to Iran before deleting any evidence.

Louise Haigh resigns as UK Transport Secretary over historic fraud conviction

Haigh is the first cabinet minister to resign from Keir Starmer's government, which has seen its approval ratings plunge since taking power in July.

Louise Haigh has resigned as UK Transport Secretary after it emerged she had a previous fraud conviction.

She pleaded guilty to a criminal offence related to incorrectly telling police that a work mobile phone was stolen in 2013 when she was working as a public policy manager for Aviva.

The Labour MP claimed the phone was taken during a "terrifying" mugging on a night out in London in 2013, but she discovered the mobile "some time later" at home and did not tell police.

In a statement released on Thursday night, she said she “triggered police attention” when she turned the mobile on. “I should have immediately informed my employer and not doing so straight away was a mistake,” she said.

Ms Haigh said her solicitor had advised her not to comment during an interview and she regrets following the advice. She pleaded guilty at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court and said that magistrates gave her the "lowest possible outcome", which was a discharge.

The incident was reportedly revealed to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who once said of former prime minister Boris Johnson that "you can't be a lawmaker and a lawbreaker", years ago, when she joined the shadow cabinet.

US mercenary sentenced by Russian court

Authorities in the Donetsk People’s Republic have handed lengthy jail terms to two foreign fighters who served in Kiev’s military

Two foreign nationals who fought in the Ukrainian military have been sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison by the Supreme Court of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, it was announced on Thursday.

The two individuals, who are citizens of the US and Venezuela, were both convicted of fighting as mercenaries, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Moscow. Russia is seeking their arrest through international warrants.

The American mercenary was identified as Charles Albert Carter, 48. Prosecutors said he arrived in Ukraine sometime in mid-2022 and joined the notorious Carpathian Sich battalion.

Officially designated the 49th Infantry Battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the unit is the reincarnation of the eponymous force created in 2014 by Oleg Kutsyn of the Ukrainian nationalist Svoboda Party. Its members have been accused of committing multiple war crimes in Donbass.

Carter had military experience before going to Ukraine and served for some time as a NATO instructor, Russian officials said.

The second convict was named as Palma Vajari Moises Urbina. According to Russian prosecutors, the 30-year-old served in the Ukrainian International Legion, the force created specifically for foreign fighters.

Russian authorities have identified thousands of mercenaries who have been paid by Kiev for their services in the ongoing conflict, according to Rodion Miroshnik, who is leading a special Foreign Ministry mission to investigate alleged Ukrainian war crimes. Those who survive their experience and flee to other countries will nevertheless be held accountable for their actions, he said in an interview in August.
