Magnetic generator at L1 could work, but we don´t have the tech
The size of Mars is a problem, don´t think the gravity can hold on to oxygen slipping out into space.
The L1, Lagrange point 1, idea is to put a magnetic generator between Mars and Sun. It stays right between them at L1, and then shelters Mars from the solarwind from the Sun.
It makes sense, very clever, but needs lots of power, which I don´t think we have the tech for, yet.
