Iran’s consulate in the Syrian city of Aleppo has come under attack by “some terrorist elements,” the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Ministry claimed on Saturday. A former local Al Qaeda affiliate launched a major offensive against the city this week.

US Firms Compete For 'Huge Contracts' To Control North Gaza Security

Israel is examining the launch of a “pilot program” that could see US private security firms replace the army in northern Gaza to “accompany food and medicine convoys” for Palestinians who remain in the devastated region, according to a report by Israeli daily Globes.

Among the top competitors for the multi-million dollar contract are Constellis, the direct successor to infamous mercenary company Blackwater, and Orbis, a little-known South Carolina company run by former generals that has worked with the Pentagon for 20 years.

Officials say the pilot program for north Gaza aims to “prevent Hamas or other gangs from taking over the aid trucks and free the IDF soldiers from the dangerous mission.”

In recent weeks, Gaza's interior ministry established a new police force to deal with groups of bandits and gangs that have been raiding humanitarian aid shipments and blackmailing international organizations in the southern Gaza Strip.

The UN has said these gangs are likely “benefiting from a passive if not active benevolence” or “protection” from the Israeli army.

In October, a third US security firm – Global Delivery Company (GDC) – which describes itself as “Uber for warzones" – claimed to be working with another firm to create and manage “humanitarian bubbles” in Gaza.

GDC is run by Mordechai Kahane, an Israeli businessman who worked with Israeli intelligence during the war on Syria to arm extremist groups seeking to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Although no official figure exists about the size of the contracts being offered by Tel Aviv for these mercenary firms, Globes cites Lt. Col. Yochanan Zoraf, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and former advisor on Arab affairs in the Israeli army, as saying the figure will likely reach “billions of shekels per year.”

“These are not companies that will manage the daily lives of the residents,” Zoraf claims, adding that “peripheral responsibility for the defense of [north Gaza] as well as the civil responsibility itself” falls at Israel's feet.

The former army officer also says Tel Aviv will likely “ask that the US – or an outside party – finance the program.”

On Tuesday, Israel Hayom reported that the pilot program has yet to receive approval from the security cabinet “due to legal difficulties in defining the occupation” based on international law.

“In order to circumvent the legal obstacles, the security services are examining bringing in external funding from humanitarian aid organizations or foreign countries for the [mercenary firms], which costs tens of millions of dollars to operate,” the report adds.

Newspaper readership has been dropping for decades, and television news channels struggle to drum up the audience of a moderately popular YouTube channel featuring cute cat videos set to quirky music.

And you know what? Great. That’s all good stuff.

CNN, MSNBC, The Guardian – all of them – they deserve to go under. Digital communication has allowed people to undermine and overthrow decades-old propaganda outlets.

But does that mean it’s over? Is Elon Musk actually correct when he reassuringly declares on X that “YOU are the media now”.

Well the answer to that depends on whether or not you think the same forces that spent untold resources constructing this system of information control are just going to give up and go home when it starts to fail.

I mean – does anyone seriously think they would?

You don’t think it ‘s rather more likely they’ll just regroup, re-calculate, and go again?

Remember – newspapers and TV channels are functionaries of the establishment, not the establishment itself.

For several centuries they have been crucial to the selling of ideas and agendas, but they are a voice not a brain. They’re just a tool of control. And tools can easily be swapped out.

One way or another, the internet has replaced television as the media now, just as television replaced radio and radio replaced print.

This is the Darwinian selection process that flows with the development of technology. And while each step of that path has in some ways led to the democratization of the media landscape, each step also saw those in power adjust their methods to the freer flow of information.

The “free internet” is just as vulnerable to money and influence of the “elite” as the “free press” was before it, only the tactics change.

In short, the mainstream media isn’t so much dying as evolving.

Today, if you want to a sell a story to the whole world you don’t need blaring red “Breaking News” banners on the ten o-clock news – you can fund an “independent podcaster” to interview a “whistleblower” on a set decorated to look impromptu and stripped down.

You pay YouTube to boost the video, or make a few short clips go viral.

When it’s popular enough, other youtubers and podcasters will start repeating it or posting “reaction videos”. It doesn’t even matter if they agree or disagree, either way you’ve set the parameters of the discussion.

Instead of full pages ads in the New York Times, NGOs, think-tanks and corporations can spend the same amount of money on a few thousand social media influencers.

After a certain point it’s self-propagating. People want the trickle down advertising revenue, and nobody wants to be left out. Bot-filled audiences will post “Please give us your take on [current thing]” in the comments of channels or pages who don’t take part, until they cave and join the throng to please their “audience”.

Not only is this a relatively cheap method of narrative control, it’s also one that few people have learned to be sceptical about as yet. Of the growing numbers of “media consumers” who have become sophisticated enough to take legacy media stories with a pinch of salt, most will be inclined to be more trusting of seemingly organic trends voiced by seemingly ordinary people.

But, of course, though we are conditioned to believe a trending hashtag has an inherent organic sincerity that the front page of the Washington Post lacks, this is not the case.

They can both equally be media marketing strategies.

Al-Qaeda attack on Aleppo serves 'the Israeli occupation entity': Syrian FM

Militants from Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham reached Aleppo City on Friday on the third day of a lighting offensive coinciding with Israeli attacks on Syria's border crossings

Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh stated on 29 November that the ongoing terrorist offensive on Aleppo and its countryside comes "within the framework of serving the goals of the Israeli occupation entity and its sponsors."

At dawn on Wednesday, militants from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Syria's Idlib Governorate launched an offensive against Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions in the western Aleppo countryside. Russian warplanes were dispatched to target the militants after the assault began.

The HTS militants launched the attack just as a ceasefire between Israel and Syria's ally in Lebanon, Hezbollah, went into effect after a 66-day war. Israeli warplanes bombed the Syria-Lebanon border immediately before the ceasefire was announced.

Foreign Minister Sabbagh pointed to Israel's role in sponsoring extremist groups such as HTS in Syria, noting that the Syrian government "has always warned of the obvious coincidence between the occupation's attacks on it and the attacks of terrorist groups in it."

In a call with his Syrian counterpart Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi expressed his country's continued support for the Syrian government, people, and army in fighting terrorism, protecting the region, and establishing security and stability.

Foreign Minister Araghchi added that the reactivation of terrorist groups, which gained a foothold in Syria during the covert US war on Damascus in 2011, is an "American-Israeli plan after Israel's defeat in Lebanon and Palestine."

Reports indicated that militants from HTS, once known as the Nusra Front, had captured significant territory in the Western Aleppo countryside since Wednesday and had successfully entered some areas of Aleppo City on Friday.

David Carden, UN Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, stated to Reuters that 27 civilians had been killed in the fighting, while Syrian state media reported that four civilians, including two students from the Faculty of Engineering at Aleppo University, were killed when the campus dormitory was targeted by shelling from the HTS militants.

Children’s Coat from Temu Contained 622 Times The Legal Limit for Toxins

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said that, as part of regular procedure, it tested 26 items of children’s winter clothing from the two low-price e-commerce companies and rival Shein. Of those 26 pieces, authorities found seven contained higher amounts of toxins like lead, cadmium and phthalate plasticizers.

The government tested one Temu jacket that had 622 times the legal limit of phthalate plasticizers, 3.6 times the legal limit of lead and 3.4 times the legal limit of cadmium. Authorities also pointed out that a decorative add-on to the jacket exceeded the allowed length, a safety concern for young children.

The other product from Temu that authorities flagged was a jumpsuit, which, according to the government, contained 294 times the legal limit for phthalate plasticizers.

Meanwhile, AliExpress caught flack for shoes containing about 5 times as much lead as is allowed in products in Korea.

The specific chemical found in the Temu jacket at an astronomic level, known as DEHP, which scientists at the U.S.’s National Institute of Health said is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”

The government of California notes that DEHP “can cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.” Seoul officials have made similar statements about the chemical and other plastic-based phthalates.

Lead and cadmium, too, are harmful for humans. According to the World Health Organization, it is “particularly harmful to young children” and endangers humans’ livers, brains, kidneys and bones. The National Cancer Institute notes on its site that cadmium is known to cause cancer.

A Temu spokesperson said the company takes product safety seriously and uses quality control efforts like documentation verification, spot checks and “continuously monitoring the platform for potential issues.”

“Of the seven products mentioned in the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s recent report, two were sold on Temu. These products had already been removed from our platform through proactive monitoring before the report was issued. We require all merchants on our platform to meet strict safety standards and adhere to robust compliance measures,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

As of 3pm on Friday, the website, viewed by Middle East Eye, displays a donation campaign for JNF UK's activities in the Negev, a desert region in southern Israel.
