Pay attention to the dynamics of conflict between individuals and social structures in historical writings. There appears to be a lot going on there which never actually gets noted openly in the way such texts are taught, yet is incredibly important to understanding the stories.

They want their work to be more than simply entertainment. They want to shape the course of human development, in ways which they firmly believe to be correct. Yet because they refuse to recognize that there is, in fact, a real world which rejects their attempts to 'solve' reality like it was some sort of math problem, they blame everyone else for not behaving in accordance with the plans they've concocted.
It's all good. The syndicate is collapsing in on itself. You ought to at least figure out how to stop accruing new debt entirely on your own though.
