The story is pretty clear that someone DID actually have his password and attempted to use it (from Ukraine, Google stopped it)… BEFORE he was provided with the correct link.
Someone with a half ounce of tech skills would have simply gone to a VPN with a exit node in DC and tried again.
I understand his password was runner123… and he changed it to runner345 (confirmed later when someone accessed his apple account).
So yes, armed with the 123 password they might have guessed at the 345.
Or, maybe he didn't get around to clicking the correct link until March 21.
