Melbourne synagogue fire devastates Adass Israel community, police treating blaze as suspicious
A Jewish community leader says worshippers at a synagogue in Melbourne's south-east were forced to run from the building as a suspicious blaze took hold early this morning.
Fire crews were called to the Adass Israel synagogue at Ripponlea shortly after 4am and found the building fully involved in fire.
Adass Israel Synagogue board member Benjamin Klein said members of the congregation were inside when the fire started.
"There was some banging on a door with some liquid thrown inside and was lit alight, the few people inside the synagogue ran outside the back door, one of them got burnt," Mr Klein said.
