Radio host Charlamagne tha God ripped California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) over his moves to “Trump-proof” California in the weeks following the president-elect’s victory.
Charlamagne said using words “like ‘Trump-proof’” will result in a person “looking like a hypocrite when, you know, you need the president for something, and you all in his face, smiling and cheesing the same way, you know, President Biden was, after they called him ‘a threat to democracy’ and all of these other things.”
“If there’s policies that you don’t like that Trump may enact, make it about that. Don’t make it about the person,”Charlamagne said in comments highlighted by Mediaite.
After long warning of President-elect Trump’s threat to democracy, Biden invited the president-elect for a meeting at the White House on Nov. 13, and promised a smooth transition.
On Nov. 7, two days after the election, Newsom calledfor a special legislative session, which began on Dec. 2. According to a proclamation from Newsom on the session, it will center on fortifying the legal resources of the Golden State for defending key rights, action on climate, families of immigrants and reproductive freedoms.
“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom said in a statement at the time.
“California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond,” he continued. “We will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
Newsom has described the special session, which kicked off Monday, as part of efforts to protect his state from federal actions under the president-elect. According to a fact sheet from Newsom’s office, the California governor is asking for a maximum of $25 million for the California Department of Justice and state agencies amid the session to stop “unconstitutional or unlawful federal government actions.”
Newsom said in a video posted to the social platform X following Trump’s 2024 election win that his “job is not to wake up every single day and get a crowbar and try [to put it in the] spokes of the wheel of the Trump administration.”
“And so again, in that spirit of an open hand, not a closed fist, that’s how we want to proceed.”
Reached for comment, the governor’s press office directed The Hill to a statement from Monday in which Newsom said the Golden State “is a tent pole of the country — from the economy to innovation to protecting and investing in rights and freedoms for all people.”
“We will work with the incoming administration and we want President Trump to succeed in serving all Americans,” he added. “But when there is overreach, when lives are threatened, when rights and freedoms are targeted, we will take action. And that is exactly what this special session is about — setting this state up for success, regardless of who is in the White House.”
