Meta/ Facebook Joins Amazon, Google and Microsoft Pursue Nuclear Power to Fund their AI Datacenters

A single query on ChatGPT consumes almost 10 times as much electricity as a Google search. Data centers powering AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT account for 2% of global electricity consumption. Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has announced plans to partner with nuclear energy developers in the United States to provide an astonishing one to four gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity starting in the early 2030s. Meta’s AI chatbot boasts more than 500 million monthly users and is on track to become the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of the year. Amazon, Microsoft and Google have recently announced partnerships with energy companies to develop small modular reactors (SMRs). Microsoft and Constellation have announced a 20-year power purchase agreement to restart the Unit 1 reactor on Three Mile Island [Unit 2 experienced meltdown in 1979].

California needs more money.

They may need to start another forest fire…

San Francisco Public Toilet Estimated to Cost $1.7M Included Massive Government Waste

San Francisco: In an area struggling with homelessness and public defecation, a small 150 sq. ft. public bathroom in a park was proposed at an estimated cost of $1.7 million. The average cost of a home in the area is $1.3 million.

A prefabricated modular building, including delivery and most of the installation costs, along with a used showroom toilet, were donated at a combined cost of about $425,000, leaving the city with less than $300,000 in expenses.

According to Reason media, the high cost of the single stall restroom, at a location that already had the necessary plumbing, was due to requirements for “builders to pass a dizzying number of regulatory stops. These include seeking approval from the Arts Commission’s Civic Design Review committee, passing review under the California Environmental Quality Act, and getting the go-ahead from the city’s Rec and Park Commission and San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors. If that isn’t enough, the project would also be subject to a period of “community feedback.” Adding to costs, the city would also be required to use union labor to construct the bathroom.”

There is a history of local governments paying absurdly large sums for public bathrooms: in 2017, New York City spent $2 million on a public park bathroom. And last year, Philadelphia announced that it would spend $1.8 million on six modular Portland Loo bathrooms over the next five years.
