Jeffries Says There's Been No Communication With Biden White House About Potential Pardons for Members
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says there's been no communication with the White House about potential pardons for sitting and former members involved in the January 6 Committee investigation into the attack on the Capitol. However, he says there's a shared view about "working class Americans who have been caught up in an overly aggressive justice system that at times has gone too far in terms of excessive sentencing as it relates to non-violent offenders who do not present any risk to society and are prepared to contribute to the wellbeing of society." Jeffries goes on to say that the focus of the Biden White House regarding potential pardons should be those individuals.

White House Says President Is Reviewing Other Pardons and Commutations, Defends Hunter Biden Pardon
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says the president will be reviewing other pardons and commutations before he leaves office and that there will be more to come around the holidays. She also defends the president's decision to pardon his son, despite saying he wouldn't on numerous occasions. She says the president wrestled with the decision, but decided that circumstances had changed, that Republicans had vowed retribution, including recent Trump law enforcement nominees. Jean-Pierre says the president believed his son had suffered enough and with the sentencing coming up he chose to grant the pardon, despite his reticence on the matter.

Butler was appointed to the seat following the death of long-time Senator Dianne Feinstein in September 2023. Butler previously served as president of EMILY's List and is the first openly LGBTQ African American to serve in the Senate. She also served as a senior adviser to Vice President Harris during her unsuccessful White House bid. She made her first speech on the Senate floor on January 17 of this year. During her brief tenure she often took to the floor to read excerpts from banned books to help bring public attention to the issue.
