Those studying abroad cannot be taken to the front line against their will, a young man from Kharkov has told the paper
Many Ukrainian teenagers are planning to leave the country and never return as the US increases pressure on Kiev to lower the mobilization age, the Times has reported.
Earlier this week, outgoing US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said it was not right that “18 to 25-year-olds are not in the fight” against Russia. “Getting younger people into the fight, we think, many of us think, is necessary,” he stressed.
In an article on Thursday, the British paper quoted a teenager from the city of Kharkov, who said that “many” of his friends are now choosing to study abroad because “it is safer there.”
“There is no risk of being taken into the army at a foreign university,” he explained, adding that he plans to study in Poland, and may not return after graduation.
"When I have finished, I will decide whether to return to Ukraine or stay there. It will be safer there, there are no bombs falling and there is no danger that I will be mobilized for the war without my consent,” he said.
Another teenager who spoke to The Times said he also wants to attend higher education in a foreign country.
Ukrainian lawmaker Aleksandra Ustinova told the paper that a decision to lower the mobilization age to 18 would be met with “huge opposition inside Ukraine and we would not get the results [on the battlefield] that we want because this is not such a large amount of people.”
“It would also be a clear signal for families to get their children out. So, if we want to lose our future generation, then, yeah, this is the thing to do,” Ustinova stressed.
The number of men aged between 18 and 25 in Ukraine is estimated to be at least 300,000.
According to UN data, at least 6.8 million Ukrainians have fled the country and become refugees since the escalation between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022. Most of them are women and children, as men of fighting age are banned from travelling abroad.
Since the start of the conflict, officials in Moscow have repeatedly accused the US and its allies of wanting “to fight to the last Ukrainian” in their effort to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who canceled a presidential election earlier this year, has “no right to push people to their death and drive them into battle.” The orders that Zelensky gives are “criminal,” Putin stressed.

‘Enough work for women’ in Ukrainian army – retired US general
Able refugees should also be brought back from abroad to fight for Kiev, Ben Hodges has said
Ukraine should consider drafting women and lowering the mobilization age to 18 to boost its chances in the conflict with Russia, Ben Hodges, a former commander of US Army in Europe, has argued. Kiev lowered the conscription age to 25 earlier this year.
The former general’s statement follows multiple reports in the mainstream media of Ukraine’s severe manpower shortages, stemming from mounting losses on the frontline of the conflict with Russia.
To bolster the mobilization drive, Kiev should draft younger people, Hodges told Ukrainian news outlet hromadske.ua in an interview published on Thursday.
“In my opinion, the conscription age in Ukraine is too high. In most countries of the world, you can join the military at the age of 18 or 19. Ukraine could also use this opportunity,” the former general said.
“I also think that there is enough work for women in the army. We need to engage women in military service more actively,” he added.
Hodges also noted that Ukrainians living abroad have no business sitting the conflict out.
“I live in Germany, and there are many Ukrainians here, I see them everywhere. This is not right. Only those who cannot help Ukraine fight should be here,” he said.
UN data suggests that as many as 6.8 million Ukrainians are living abroad, having fled the country since the conflict escalated in 2022.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken similarly said that Kiev needs to get younger people onto the front line, in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday. “Right now, 18 to 25-year olds are not in the fight,” he said.
Ukraine’s flagging mobilization drive is reportedly further exacerbated by high desertion rates. According to an article in the Financial Times last week, Ukrainian authorities opened at least 60,000 criminal cases against deserters between January and October of this year.
The actual number of desertions since 2022 could be as high as 200,000, the Associated Press wrote last week, citing a Ukrainian lawmaker with knowledge of military matters.
Moscow has repeatedly slammed Kiev’s NATO backers as pushing the country into a war “to the last Ukrainian.” Russia views the conflict as a proxy war waged by the US and its allies against Russia via Ukraine.

The use of terrorists to reach geopolitical goals, as is currently happening with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group in Syria, is unacceptable, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“We are absolutely convinced of the inadmissibility of using terrorists like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to achieve geopolitical goals, as it is now being done by orchestrating the offensive in the Idlib de-escalation zone,” Lavrov said on Sunday, after meeting with Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers in Qatar.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye, Iran, and Russia met in the capital, Doha, on Saturday to discuss the lightning rebel advance in Syria.
The militant group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of Jabhat al-Nusra, along with its allies, launched a surprise offensive against Syrian government forces last week, capturing large swaths of territory, including parts of Aleppo and the city of Hama. The Syrian military has redeployed forces to threatened regions, with the support of Russian warplanes.
Earlier this week, Lavrov suggested that the HTS offensive could be supported by the US and the UK, emphasizing that Moscow is working with Türkiye and Iran to stabilize the situation.
President Bashar Assad has vowed to “eliminate terrorists” who attacked the country and to punish their “sponsors and supporters,” amid media reports that militants received training from Ukrainian military intelligence.
Syrian media reports have claimed that the government forces have managed to neutralize a total of 2,500 terrorists, with the help of Russian air support.
The Syrian military has reported that state-backed troops operating in the Daraa and Suwayda regions in the south of the country have been redeployed and have “established a strong and cohesive defensive cordon” to repel terrorist attacks on checkpoints. The military described the raids as attempts to divert Damascus’ attention from Homs and Hama.

On Sunday, outgoing White House resident Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, absolving him of any federal crimes committed between 2014 and 2024 including all of his financial crimes with foreign officials and regimes.
Hunter Biden’s pardon comes in the wake of convictions for felony gun charges and a guilty plea to tax evasion. The younger Biden’s legal troubles have long been the focal point of Republican scrutiny, with allegations of influence-peddling, bribery, and shady dealings involving foreign entities like Ukrainian energy firm Burisma.
According to Newsweek, Hunter Biden was supposed to be sentenced on December 12 in Delaware for three felonies related to purchasing a gun while using drugs in October 2018. He could face up to 25 years in prison.
In May 2023, House Oversight Chairman James Comer held an explosive press conference on the Biden Crime Family.
House Republicans announced they reviewed 170 suspicious activity reports linked to the Biden Crime Family.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) highlighted the suspicious activity reports and the millions of dollars that flowed to the Bidens.
“The fundamental question is: what did [Biden’s family] do to warrant the receipt of millions and millions of dollars?” Jim Jordan asked the reporters in attendance.
“Why did Joe Biden’s brother, why did Joe Biden’s sister-in-law, why did Joe Biden’s son — why did so many family members get the money?” he said.
Comer identified the NINE Bidens who are implicated in the corruption.
“Bank records show the Biden family, their associates, and their companies received over $10 million from foreign nationals and their companies,” Comer said.
Comer added, “Joe Biden’s son. Joe Biden’s brother. Joe Biden’s brother’s wife. Hunter Biden’s girlfriend/Beau Biden’s widow, Hunter Biden’s ex-wife. Hunter Biden’s current wife. And 3 children of the president’s son and the president’s brother. So we’re talking about grandchildren – a grandchild. That’s odd. Most people that work hard every day a grandchild doesn’t get a wire from a foreign national.”

Republican Senator Attacks President-Elect Trump in Comments to NBC News: “I don’t think it’s smart for him to humiliate Trudeau like he has”
A Republican Senator attacked President-Elect Trump in comments to NBC News over his treatment of Canada and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying, “I don’t think it’s smart for him [Trump] to humiliate Trudeau like he has.” The Senator, who was given anonymity by NBC to criticize Trump, also said that Trump “doesn’t have a huge mandate. This is a 50-50 country.”
Trudeau flew down to meet Trump for dinner at Mar-a-Lago last weekend with their respective staff members and Senator-elect Dave McCormick (R-PA) after Trump threatened Canada, Mexico and China with stiff tariffs if the three nations did not act to stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S.
Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman, who was at the dinner, spoke to the AP about the meeting (excerpt):
Hillman said the bulk of Friday night’s dinner centered around Trump’s border concerns. The ambassador said a priority of Trudeau’s was to point out the degree of difference.
Hillman said there really is no comparison, noting there is essentially zero trafficking of fentanyl from Canada to the United States. She said there are seizures but authorities say those are personal use seizures and not criminal trafficking. She said that 99.8% of the fentanyl seized by U.S. authorities in the U.S. comes from Mexico.
But Hillman said Canada is ready to make new investments in border security and there are plans for more helicopters, drones and law enforcement officers.
She also noted an agreement between Canada and the United States that allows for migrants caught crossing illegally into the United States to be sent back to Canada. She said that was talked about. She said Mexico and the U.S. do not have a similar agreement.
At the dinner that lasted three hours, Hillman said America’s trade deficit with Canada was also raised. Hillman said the U.S. had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year but noted a third of what Canada sells into the U.S. are energy exports and prices have been high.
For his part, Trump reportedly jokingly told Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st state with him as governor if Canada could not handle his policies:
