Defense Express Dec 8, 2024
The swift overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria was marked by the disgraceful retreat of russian contingent
Russian contingent in Syria has begun a withdraw after rapidly losing control of key territories. According to the post by the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, russians have withdrawn warships from the Tartus naval base and are moving the remains of weapons from the Hmeimim Air Base.
It is known that on December 8, 2024, Admiral Grigorovich frigate of russian Black Sea Fleet and Inzhener Trubin cargo ship of the Northern Fleet set sail from Tartus to the Mediterranean sea. The move is part of a retreat after the loss of Damascus, which is now under the control of opposition forces. russians are also transferring military equipment and weapons from Syria to russia using military aircraft operating out of the Hmeymim Airbase.
The unrest in Syria continues to escalate, with opposition forces moving toward the coast, putting russian military bases in Tartus and Hmeymim at risk. If these bases are lost, it would represent a de facto defeat for the Kremlin in the Middle East.
