Delta waves are the slowest brain waves in humans and are associated with deep sleep and relaxation:
Frequency: Delta waves have a frequency of 1โ4 Hz.
Amplitude: Delta waves often have the largest amplitude of all brain waves.
When they occur: Delta waves are most common in infants and young children, but are also seen in deep sleep in adults.
What they indicate: Delta waves are an indicator of sleep pressure and are associated with restorative sleep.
Abnormal activity: Abnormal delta wave activity can be seen in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, dementia, and severe ADHD.
Diet: Diets low in carbohydrates, like a ketogenic diet, can increase delta activity in healthy people.
Delta waves are also a feature of the electrocardiogram (ECG) of WolffโParkinsonโWhite (WPW) syndrome. WPW syndrome is characterized by an accessory pathway that allows electrical impulses to bypass the normal conduction system, causing the ventricles to depolarize earlier than expected. This results in a short PR interval and slurred upstroke of the QRS complex on the ECG, which is known as the delta wave.
