Arrest made in connection to shooting of a Cicero police officer - Tren de Aragua

Giovanni Saldivar, 19, a known street gang member, has been charged with the shooting of a police officer in the early morning hours of Dec. 7.

Officials say an officer approached a vehicle that was double-parked at 35th Street and 61st Court. The officer asked the driver to move and as he began to drive away, Saldivar allegedly shot at the officer, according to Cicero officials.

Police apprehended Saldivar at a nearby bar.

The injured officer was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon in good condition, according to Cicero officials. The officer was escorted home from over 20 police agencies from the area.

Saldivar has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated batter - use of a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Last week, town President Larry Dominick has issued a statement urging the state legislature for stricter punishments for people convicted of injuring or killing a police officer with a gun.

“The Golan Heights will forever be an inseparable part of the state of Israel,” he added.

Israel unilaterally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, a claim considered illegal by all of the world except the US. Until Sunday, however, Israeli troops were not stationed along the border of the Golan Heights and Syria, thanks to a 1974 agreement under which the Israeli and Syrian governments agreed to establish a buffer zone on the Israeli side of the frontier where only UN peacekeepers could deploy.

Qusay al-Dahhak, Syria’s envoy to the UN, asked the international organization to “put an end to Israeli attacks on Syria and not to allow Israel to benefit from the transition the Syrians are doing in the country.”

HTS extremists appoint new prime minister of Syria

The US and UK are considering removing HTS – a former Al-Qaeda affiliate with many atrocities under its belt – off their terrorist lists

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former Al-Qaeda affiliate that has just assumed control over Syria, has appointed Mohammad Bashir as the head of a new Syrian transitional authority.

Bashir was the prime minister of the HTS-led Salvation Government, which was formed in 2017 and ruled Syria's northern province of Idlib – where HTS was based before the massive Turkish-backed assault against Syria that began late last month.

According to reports on Monday, Bashir has been chosen as the new prime minister of Syria, and is coordinating with outgoing Syrian premier Mohammad al-Jalali, who announced on Sunday that he is ready for a “smooth transition” and will cooperate with “any leadership chosen by the Syrian people.”

HTS – formerly known as Al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, the Nusra Front – has been implicated in numerous atrocities, including kidnapping, public executions, indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas, and other war crimes.

In 2016, the Nusra Front was rebranded and expanded into Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, a coalition of armed factions with support from Qatar. The following year, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham became HTS in another Qatari-sponsored rebranding initiative aimed at legitimizing the group.

HTS has been a proscribed terrorist organization by the UN, US, UK, and EU. Despite a large US bounty on the head of HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the extremist leader sat with CNN for an interview last week.
