Space Force Generative AI Challenge empowers Guardians through education, collaboration

Dec. 10, 2024

What, exactly, is generative AI and how can it improve Space Force Guardian readiness in an era of Great Power Competition?

These were the foundational questions driving the inaugural U.S. Space Force Generative AI Challenge, an eight-week combination of AI crash course and problem-solving hack-a-thon that engaged 350-plus participants, delivered 11 learning sessions, and produced three finalists that will present their generative AI solutions — and compete for first place — at this year’s Space Power Conference, Dec. 10 - 14 in Orlando, Florida.

As AI applications like ChatGPT gain popularity among a general populace looking to save time and effort on everyday tasks, the Department of Defense is embracing the use of more specific and/or sophisticated iterations across a range of applications.

Recognizing that the rapid pace of change in this area requires the DoD to be agile and adaptive in its approach, DoD’s current focus is on experimentation and rapid deployment to achieve the best solutions for the nation.

Enter the Space Force Generative AI Challenge

What began as an idea at the senior leadership level developed quickly and organically through grassroots volunteers including Capt. Jake Schneider, chief of portfolio, platform, at Space Systems Command based in El Segundo.

“Word kind of spread through the grapevine that ‘hey, we want to do a Space Force GenAI challenge’ and as someone with previous AI experience, I was in,” Schneider said.

“Before you know it, this network of volunteers kind of happened and we started making the phone calls and getting the right people in the right spots.”

As the program evolved and readied for launch, organizers recognized that interest in AI within the ranks extended well beyond super coders and other like-minded “techies.”

“A lot of people had very little background in AI but they had a huge interest and wanted to learn more,” Schneider said. “So, we organized an educational series that happened one or two times per week over Teams where we brought in experts from the field.”

Some of the sessions were introductory. “We’re talking, ‘explain it to me like I’m five,” Schneider said. “What is generative AI? What are the differences between AI and Generative AI? How can we use AI to automate tasks, improve decision making, or create content?”

Other sessions delved more deeply into the technology itself, covering the mechanics of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), open-versus-closed source query platforms, and the computational processing power required for more advanced applications.

“In one way or another, we were all there to learn,” Schneider noted.

The hybrid-virtual and hack-a-thon like competition kicked off on Sept. 12, with in-person events and live-streamed feeds from El Segundo, Washington, D.C., and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Registered teams were challenged to create solutions to Space Force problem statements leveraging generative AI.

Problem sets spanned a wide array of disciplines, from mission-focused topics like space battle management and launch to general business administration and quality of life issues such as childcare.

Participants were equally varied, representing DAF, OSD, SAF, JS/J6, CYBERCOM, SPACECOM, INDO-PACOM, CENTCOM, SOCOM, NRO, MDA, DARPA, NSDC, Army Futures, AFRL, the Marine Innovation Unit, FORSCOM, and Army DEVCOM.

“We had participation from just about every branch of the military,” Schneider said. Military, civilian and contractor personnel, with some participating from as far away as Ramstein Air Base, Germany.”

At the end of the eight-week challenge, three proposals were elevated to semi-final status. Two of the three finalist teams are from SSC: they include members of SSC’s Atlas Office and Space Launch Delta 45.

The third team comes from U.S. Air Forces Europe – Air Forces Africa. All three are headed to the Space Power Conference in Orlando for selection of the final winner.

And all three demonstrate the wide range of applications for generative AI solutions, from health and fitness to data management to language translation. Here’s a quick re-cap of the three:

The generative AI solution developed by the Atlas team customizes fitness plans to the specific needs of Space Force members, taking into account unique factors such as irregular shift and work schedules, remote deployments, and limited food options.

The app aligns with Space Force Fit goals and would include continuous tracking and appraisal of fitness programs customized by location and integrated with Guardian Resilience Team training.

>>22142294

For example, a senior master sergeant recently PCS’d (permanent change of station) to Colorado Springs and adjusting their cardio levels to an additional 6,000 feet of altitude could use Atlas’ proposed gen AI solution to get recommendations for local hiking and running trails.

A lieutenant coming back from a knee injury could use the gen AI app to generate a workout plan that focuses on rehabilitation and allows their physical therapist to monitor recovery progression.

Or, a new Specialist 2 living in the dormitory and limited to a meal card plan, could use the app to review the their dining facility’s daily menu and incorporate it into a holistic nutrition plan.

The team from USAFE-AFAFRICA tackled a more specific challenge: how to more quickly and efficiently translate communications in NATO’s official language (English and French) to accommodate the 28 languages and 32 dialects native to NATO members – a critical need, they reported, as many member countries do not distribute important announcements from the U.S. unless it is in their native tongue.

Currently, each translation must be done individually by a linguist with specialty in a particular language.

USAFE’s generative AI solution would leverage BABEL, a free and open-source JavaScript transcompiler, to facilitate high-quality, secure, and multilingual translations for rapid communication with NATO allies.

It would be the first-of-its-kind secured translation capability, featuring a simple, responsive design that would securely generate information via DoD infrastructure, reduce linguist man-hours to seconds, and replace the need for commercial software licensing at a cost savings of approximately $100,000 per squadron.

Rounding out the three semi-finalists is the Velociraptor team from SSC’s SLD 45 in Florida.

This team’s generative AI solution addresses the current and future reality of launch, in which personnel numbers remain static but launches, particularly commercial, grow exponentially.

More launches mean more data points to compile, review, analyze, and archive.

SLD 45’s solution leverages Mattermost, an open-source, self-hostable online chat service, coupled with a tactical data cache. Its capabilities include real-time audience transcription with generative AI summaries that capture and transcribe live on-console communications.

The team cited four key benefits: AI-powered automation reduces manual tasks and enhances mission efficiency; real-time transcription with keyword detection improves situational awareness; automated crew logs and after-action reports streamline after-action reporting; and applications can be used for training and skill development.

N.J. military base had 11 ‘confirmed’ mystery drone sightings, Army says

Updated: Dec. 10, 2024, 7:14 a.m.

Picatinny Arsenal, the Army facility in Morris County, has had 11 confirmed sightings of unauthorized drones flying over in its airspace in recent weeks, military officials said.

The first confirmed sighting at Picatinny witnessed by a police or security officer at the arsenal was Nov. 13, five days earlier than previously reported, Army officials said Monday.

Seven other sightings remained unconfirmed, including one reported Friday at the military research and manufacturing facility in Jefferson and Rockaway Township.

“While the source and cause of these aircraft operating in our area remain unknown, we can confirm that they are not the result of any Picatinny Arsenal-related activities,” said Lt. Col. Craig A. Bonham II, Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander.

It is illegal to fly unauthorized drones over military bases. The FAA added additional drone flight restrictions over Picatinny and Trump National Golf Club in Somerset County last week.

The sightings at the Army facility were among the earliest reported in a flood of drone sightings in recent weeks around the state.

Residents have reported multiple drones flying over the same areas of New Jersey each night along with unusually large drones, the kind not usually used by hobbyists, over some areas.

It is unclear if the drone sightings are related. Gov. Phil Murphy and other law enforcement officials have said there is no evidence the unexplained drones pose a threat to the state. The FBI is investigating the sightings statewide, including the reports at Picatinny Arsenal.

Murphy said there were 49 reports of drone sighting statewide on Sunday, but some of those turned out to be planes mistakenly identified as drones. Investigators were looking into the other reports.

Picatinny Arsenal released a list Monday of the dates of 18 sightings, including the 11 confirmed incidents.

“Confirmed” means a police officer or security guard “visibly witnessed a drone” while or after receiving the report, military officials said.

Picatinny Arsenal’s list also includes seven “unconfirmed” reports of drones, which means a police officer received a call but was “unable to verify the object upon arriving on the scene,” Army officials said. Two of the unconfirmed reports were listed as “aircraft.”

Bonham said Picatinny Arsenal officials immediately began investigating the initial reports, with several local, state, and federal partners.

The FBI, the lead agency in the investigation, did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the sightings at Picatinny.

The Picatinny Arsenal Police Department received the reports of the evening drone activity.

Confirmed sightings occurred Nov. 13, Nov. 18, Nov. 19, and Nov. 24, when there were two, as well as nightly between Nov. 28 and Nov. 30.

There were also two confirmed sightings on Dec. 3 and one on Dec. 6.

There were two unconfirmed sightings Nov. 26, one Dec. 2, three Dec. 4, and one Dec. 6.

At Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck, officials said they are actively monitoring the drone sightings.

“While we have received reports from our neighboring communities and law enforcement partners regarding drone activity near the installation, there have been no reports of drone activity in the airspace above Naval Weapons Station Earle at this time,” said Bill Addison, a spokesman for the station.

Officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County referred questions about whether the base has had any drone sightings to the FBI.

Authorities Taking Mysterious UFO Sightings In New Jersey ‘Deadly Seriously,’ Governor Says

Dec 9, 2024

Authorities are taking sightings of “very sophisticated” unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that have unnerved residents in New Jersey “deadly seriously,” Governor Phil Murphy said on Monday.

Nighttime sightings that have reportedly gone on for weeks have prompted investigations, FAA flight restrictions, and 21 mayors demanding further transparency from Murphy on what is happening.

“I don’t blame people for being frustrated,” Murphy told reporters, adding that officials from “all levels of government” including the FBI and Homeland Security Department are looking into the matter.

Last week, the FBI released a statement stating that it was seeking any information from the public on “the cluster of what look to be drones and a possible fixed wing aircraft” along the Raritan River.

Murphy, a Democrat, emphasized that officials do not see anything that would warrant public safety concerns.

“Having said that, it’s really frustrating that we don’t have more answers as to where they’re coming from and why they’re doing what they’re doing,” he added.

The governor said there were 49 sightings on Sunday night, but noted he believed the figure to be inflated with a fixed-wing plane mistaken for a drone and multiple people reporting the same object.

“So we think these are overstated, but it’s a non-zero number,” Murphy said.

Murphy said he was involved in discussions with the White House and Homeland Security leaders “pretty much all day” on Sunday.

“I’m hoping that we’ll get answers sooner than later,” he said. “I would just ask folks to continue to let the FBI or their local law enforcement know when they see something.”

What people are seeing are “apparently very, as I understand it, very sophisticated. The minute you get eyes on them, they go dark,” Murphy said.

“We’re obviously most concerned about sensitive targets, and sensitive critical infrastructure,” he said. “So we’ve got military assets, we’ve got utility assets, we’ve got the president-elect — one of his homes here.”

Murphy was alluding to President-elect Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, where “car-sized” drones have reportedly been seen nearby.

“This is something we’re taking deadly seriously,” Murphy said. “We’ve gotten good cooperation out of the feds, but we need more, and that was my plea.”

Murphy pledged to be transparent once he knows more.

“The minute we know something, I’m not going to hide it under a bush,” he said.

Murphy said he was not aware of any “nefarious drone” crashing, adding, “If there is one that’s crashed, could someone please call me and let me know where that is?”

The governor did acknowledge “rumored downings,” noting that one turned out to be a toy and another was not found.

“Having our hands on equipment that’s on the ground would be helpful, no question about it,” Murphy said.

UFO drops off little orbs as it flies across the Arizona night sky before vanishing

16:14, 10 Dec 2024

A UFO appeared to drop off little orbs as it flew across the Arizona night sky, before disappearing into thin air.

The 24-second clip, uploaded to Reddit, shows a large well lit object dropping glowing orbs as it moved through the skyline on Friday, December 6.

Then, once it makes its second dispatch of bright items, the strange craft appears to suddenly vanish into thin air.

Naturally speculation about what viewers had just witnessed was pretty fervent in the thread which followed.

Theories ranged from the aforementioned little orbs, through to molten material released by alien aircraft, before heading back to outer space.

The sighting comes hot on the heels of several flashing balls of light filmed over Washington DC in what appeared to be a "no-fly zone.

One user wrote: "I love to see a UFO pootin' off little orbs.."

Another said: "Not orbs. It's some sort of discharge of molten material that seems to take place before they vanish.

Plenty of reports about this phenomenon on the web."

A third added:: "I saw the same thing .above Lockheed and NASA Moffett Field in Sunnyvale CA. Dropped about 2 dozen little lights at the same altitude and darted off."

And a fourth opined: "Believe me I’m not usually the one that says “it’s a flare or lantern” but in this case it looks like whatever it is is on fire and embers dropping down.

However, one potential killjoy pointed out a drone event which was taking place in the the area that very evening.

The evening was set to include a drone light show.

However, one user countered: "Hate to break it to you but drones shows are deployed from a large flat area," to keep the mystery of the disappearing phenomenon enigmatic.

Priest demands infamous UFO site 'destroys' statue of 'demon-like' alien

10:07, 10 Dec 2024

A fuming priest has demanded that a statue of an alien be destroyed in a town known only for an infamous UFO incident. In 1986, Dalnegorsk in Russia became a hotbed of UFO fanatics after an incident occurred similar to that of the Roswell crash in 1947.

It happened at 7.55pm on January 29, and has been called the “best documented crash”. That cold January day, a reddish sphere flew into the small mining town from the far east of Russia in a south-easterly direction, crossing part of Dalnegorsk before crashing at the Izvestkovaya Mountain – also known as Height/Hill 611, because of its size.

The object silently flew parallel to the ground and was described as being a near-perfect round shape, approximately three metres in diameter.

It reportedly had no projections or cavities, and its colour was similar to that of burning stainless steel.

A witness, known only as V Kandakov, said that the speed of the UFO was close to 15 metres per hour. The object slowly ascended and descended, and its glow would heat up every time it rose up.

On its approach to Hill 611 the object "jerked", and fell down like a rock and crashed – before disappearing.

Moving forward to today, a very angry priest has now raged over the incident and a little statue erected in the town to honour what happened.

The bronzed alien and UFO creation has seen the Dean of the Dalnegorsk Deanery, Priest Andrei Vasyakin write a letter to the mayor on “behalf of the Orthodox Christians” demanding the statue be removed because it looks like a “demonic creature”.

He said that “a religious procession and prayer service are held in this place every year, which means that aliens have no place here,” Baza news claims.

He has also pleaded with officials not to allow any more statues of a similar nature to be installed in the area, writing: “On December 6, 2024, opposite the bus station, an art object was installed - a 'cosmic alien' in the form of a demonic creature, which has become a landmark of our city.

“In this place, the Church annually holds a procession and a prayer service, as the worship cross and the site of the first church are not far away.

This character offends the religious feelings of the Orthodox people of the Dalnegorsk district.

“Based on the foregoing, we ask for your assistance in removing this object and preventing the installation of similar objects on the territory of our city.”

Mysterious Pink Orb in Sky over Egypt Sparks Theories

Published Dec 09, 2024 at 12:28 PM EST

Images of a pink orb floating in the sky have gone viral after the unexplained phenomenon appeared over Egypt for several hours, then disappeared.

The orb, which was viewed tens of thousands of times, showed the large object floating still in the sky, sometimes trailing white residue.

It was first seen early on Sunday morning, and several social media users were baffled by the appearance.

The phenomenon prompted several theories as to what could have caused it, some people suggesting it could have been created by other celestial bodies, such as Jupiter.

Initial reports indicated that some users thought the orb was the moon, until it changed color.

"This is Jupiter, apparently it is correct that Jupiter enters between the Earth and the Sun after dawn," one sleuth wrote on Threads.

Another person wrote, on Reddit: "On last Sunday morning nearly at 6:30 a.m. many people in Alexandria of Egypt had seen a strange cloudy pink spot on the sky.

Witnesses on average reported that at first it was white as the size of the moon, and most people had mistaken it as the moon itself, then it grew larger and later it diffused as a smoke very fast.

"One man explained as it was an explosion without a sound. Another one said that there were white lights in the middle of it.

The phenomenon continued for nearly 5 minutes and has been seen in Alexandria, Marsa Matruh, Menofia and even in Libya.

"Anyone has a logical or scientific explanation for this? The images are from different sources on Facebook and X (Twitter) and no other international source has reported it yet …"

The Reddit poster added that it could have been created by a rocket launch, which would explain the white residue created by the image.

Similar images have previously been attributed to SpaceX rocket launches, which leave red-pink vapor behind as they leave the atmosphere.

Rockets leaving the ionosphere can cause gas molecules to create an aurora effect, though it normally isn't as circular as the shapes seen on Sunday.

Bramnick Calls for ‘Limited State of Emergency’ in Drones Case

December 10, 2024, 10:13 am

Senator Jon Bramnick (R-21) released the follow statement regarding the mysterious drones flying over New Jersey:

“The State of New Jersey should issue a limited state of emergency banning all drones until the public receives an explanation regarding these multiple sightings.”

By way of context via ABC News:

The mayors of 21 towns in New Jersey are demanding action in a letter sent to Gov. Phil Murphy over the mysterious drones that have been spotted flying overhead in recent weeks.

Since mid-November, large drones of uncertain origin have been repeatedly spotted in the sky at night over central and northern New Jersey.

The drones, which are larger than the type typically used by hobbyists, have raised concerns due to their proximity to both a military installation and President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course.

Also, this from TAPInto:

an increase in drone sightings across the borough and state over the past few weeks. At the request of State and Federal Law Enforcement partners, residents are asked to report any information or footage of the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

While it is not illegal to fly drones in unrestricted airspace, authorities are working to monitor their activity and ensure public safety.

The FBI Newark, NJ State Police, and NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness are asking for the public to report any information related to the recent sightings of possible drones flying in several areas along the Raritan River.

Witnesses have spotted the cluster of what looks to be drones and a possible fixed wing aircraft. The FBI has reports from the public and law enforcement dating back several weeks.

Four signs Baba Vanga's WW3 prediction may come true from 'Fall of Syria' to 'Lord Putin'

15:08, 09 Dec 2024

A Blind Mystic, named Baba Vanga, who many consider the “Nostradamus of the Baltics,” has several very concerning World War 3 predictions that name drop current events, despite the woman being dead for over a quarter of a century.

These predictions have garnered massive attention for her pinpoint accuracy in foreseeing the currently ongoing events in the Middle East.

Despite losing her sight as a child, the mystic has eerily foreseen several tragic world events with a very concerning 85% success rate.

The mystic had predicted “as soon as Syria falls, expect a great war between the West and the East.”

She places the start of this great war in the spring and harrows the destruction of the Western world as a result of it.

“In the spring, a war in the East will begin and there will be a third World War. A war in the East that will destroy the West”

'Fall of Syria'

Many believe the “Fall of Syria” to correlate with the current events happening throughout the country now.

The Syrian government has collapsed in recent days as the Syrian President, Bashar al–Assad, fled to Moscow to receive asylum out of "humanitarian considerations".

Syria is now currently under the control of rebel groups.

On Sunday, Russia news agencies reported the arrival of Assad and his family and quoted a Kremlin source on Assad's arrival.

The Kremlin and Putin are yet to publicly comment on the ongoing events inside Syria and the Syrian leader is yet to appear publicly since rebels entered the capital city, early on Sunday morning.

Putin 'Lord of the world'

The Vanga spoke explicitly about the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. The mystic has claimed that Putin will become "lord of the world" after Europe is reduced to a "wasteland."

She has further stated that "all will thaw, as if ice, only one will remain untouched – Vladimir glory, glory of Russia", which many have linked these comments to predict a Russian victory in Ukraine.

This is coupled with anxieties that surround Ukraine as American support has begun to "thaw" due Trumps incoming administration making it apparent that they do not share the same ironclad commitment to Ukraine's defence unlike pervious administrations.

What else has she got right?

Her most notable predictions include, foreseeing the collapse of the Soviet Union and the USSR, the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster, the death of Stalin and the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Her most harrowing prediction continues to be the 9/11 terrorist attacks, in which she said, “Horror, horror.

The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing.”

The mystic has labelled the year 2024 as the start of the apocalypse brought by a string of outwards incidents across the world.

Some believe this was the on-going conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas.

'The great war'

During her life Vanga predicted there will be a deadly war in Europe starting next year in 2025 and warned of a great conflict that would devastate Europe and the whole population of Europe.

Her most calamitous prediction dates to 5079, in which she said the world will “completely end” so, thankfully, the most eventful stuff for humanity is still in the very distant future according to her.

A New Method to Derive an Empirical Lower Limit on the Mass Density of a UFO

Dec 9, 2024

Any object moving through air radiates excess heat in the form of infrared air luminosity, L.

The air luminosity is a fraction of the total power dissipated by the object’s speed, v, times the frictional force of air acting on the object.

If the object accelerates, then this friction force must be smaller than the force provided by the engine which propels the object. The net force equals the object’s mass, M, times its acceleration, a.

In conclusion, one gets an unavoidable lower limit on the mass of an accelerating object.

The object’s mass must be larger than the infrared luminosity from heated air around it, divided by the product of the object’s acceleration and speed. In other words:

M L/|v*a|.

This limit provides an elegant way to constrain the minimum mass of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), also labeled as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs).

To turn the inequality into an equality, one needs to know the detailed object shape and atmospheric conditions around the object.

The first Galileo Project Observatory at Harvard University collects data on 100,000 objects in the sky every month.

A comprehensive description of its commissioning data on 500,000 objects was recently posted online.

The data includes infrared images captured by an all-sky Dalek array of eight uncooled infrared cameras placed on half a sphere, resembling the head of the fictional robot character R2-D2 in the film Star Wars.

Within the coming month, the Galileo Project’s research team plans to employ multiple Daleks separated by a few miles, in order to measure distances to objects through the method of triangulation.

The heated air’s infrared flux, f, and distance, R, can be combined to infer the luminosity, L, through the relation:

L= 4pif*R².

The angular velocity, (dq/dt), times the distance, R, provide the transverse component of the velocity vector, v, which can be combined with the time derivative of the distance, (dR/dt), to get the square of the total speed,

v²= [R(dq/dt)]² + (dR/dt)².

The time derivative of the velocity vector provides the acceleration vector, a=(dv/dt).

Remarkably, in the special case where the radial speed is negligible, |dR/dt| << R|dq/dt|, we find that the lower limit on the object’s mass is independent of distance,

M4pi f /|(dq/dt)*(d²q/dt²)| .

The physical size of the object can be derived as the product of its angular size times its distance, (Dq)*R.

The minimum mass could then be used to derive the minimum mass per unit volume, or mass density, of the object.

If the measured velocity and acceleration of a technological object are outside the flight characteristics and performance envelopes of drones or airplanes, then the object would be classified by the Galileo Project’s research team as an outlier.

In such a case, it would be interesting to calculate the minimum mass density of the object. If the result exceeds normal solid densities, then the object would qualify as anomalous, a UAP.

Infrared emission by the object would be a source of confusion unless the object is resolved and the emission from it can be separated from the heated air around it.

All flying objects made by humans have a volume-averaged mass density which is orders of magnitude below 22.6 grams per cubic centimeter, the density of Osmium — which is the densest metal known on Earth. A UFO with a higher mass density than Osmium would have to carry exotic material, not found on Earth.

By summer 2025, there will be three Galileo Project observatories operating in three different states within the U.S., collecting data on a few million objects per year.

With new quantitative data on infrared luminosities, velocities and accelerations, it would be possible to check whether there are any UFOs denser than Osmium.

Yesterday, I announced the launch of the Galileo Project Foundation, founded on the bold belief that humanity can no longer ignore the potential existence of extraterrestrial technological civilizations.

Our extensive collection of data relies on donations, which can be processed through the new Galileo Foundation link. In reciprocity, The Galileo Project will share its data with the public.

Are there any UFOs denser than Osmium? If they exist, we might know it by summer 2025.
