I've read in a couple of different places yeas and nays that Pierces / Pearces in this country are descendents of Thomas Percy of Gunpowder Plot fame. The relatives changed their names to disassociate themselves from that event and booked passage to the Colonies. One of those relatives would be Barbara Bush (nee Pierce), so it might be a stretch, but our self-appointed overlords could be hiding in plain sight.
