The EU is stepping up support for Syria with a new Humanitarian Air Bridge to deliver emergency healthcare and essential supplies.

An additional €4M has been mobilised to address urgent humanitarian needs.

EU launches Humanitarian Air Bridge operation for Syria to deliver emergency supplies and boosts humanitarian funding

The European Commission is launching a new Humanitarian Air Bridge operation for those most in need in Syria, to deliver emergency healthcare and other essential supplies, as well as increasing its humanitarian funding.

EU funded aid flights will bring a total of 50 tonnes of health supplies from EU stockpiles in Dubai, to be transported to Adana, in Türkiye for distribution across the border in the coming days. A further 46 tonnes of health, education and shelter items from another EU stockpile in Denmark will be trucked to Adana and provided to Unicef and the World Health Organization for distribution within Syria.

The Commission has also mobilised an additional €4 million to address the most urgent humanitarian needs of people, bringing total humanitarian support to €163 million in 2024.

This new funding aims to scale up humanitarian assistance channelled through EU humanitarian partners already operating in Syria to ensure critical aid is provided swiftly. This includes the provision of trauma kits, support of critical gaps in healthcare facilities, emergency shelter kits and sanitation support. It also includes funding for the distribution of food parcels to 61,500 people in northern Syria.

Over the past 13 years, the EU and its Member States mobilised more than €33.3 billion in humanitarian, development, economic and stabilisation assistance, supporting Syrians both inside the country and across the region.

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said: “The collapse of the Assad regime offers new hope for the Syrian people. But this moment of change also carries risks and brings hardship. With the situation on the ground so volatile, our help to the people of Syria is ever more important. This is why we have increased our humanitarian funding for this year, to more than €160 million. We are also launching a humanitarian air bridge carrying vital supplies, such as food, medicines and shelter items. I will be further discussing the delivery of humanitarian aid in my meeting with President Erdogan on Tuesday. We stand with the people of Syria.”

Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said: “We are scaling up our humanitarian assistance with concrete support for those forcibly displaced and affected by the difficult situation in Syria. Our new Air Bridge flights will deliver aid to save lives. As we witness a historic change that might offer opportunities to finally reach peace and stability for people in Syria, we must not lose sight of the humanitarian consequences of intensifying hostilities and conflict on civilians.”

Background

14 years of war left people in Syria facing mass displacement, widespread food insecurity, crumbling infrastructure, economic decline, and preventable diseases, with some 16.7 million people in urgent need of assistance. Escalating hostilities in Lebanon also worsened the situation, pushing over 560,000 individuals to cross into Syria to flee conflict.

The impact on civilians due to the latest political developments includes displacement, deaths, and injuries. The situation remains fluid, as hostilities are ongoing in the northeast of the country and humanitarian needs multiply.

Despite many challenges, including the rapid changes in humanitarian access, the EU continues to provide impartial humanitarian aid to those in need across Syria.

In haunted Salem, a Jewish church founder preaches the art of ‘Satanic’ social change

At a former funeral home in a town inextricably linked to witchcraft, secular Jew Malcolm Jarry opens a new heaquarters for his Satanic Temple, a controversial movement with up to 50,000 members worldwide

SALEM, Massachusetts — Just in time for Halloween, a controversial Satanic temple has set up its international headquarters in Massachusetts’ beloved Salem.

Located one-mile from historic sites tied to Salem’s 1692 witchcraft hysteria, the building — a former funeral home — was inaugurated last month by activist Malcolm Jarry, a self-described “secular Jew” who co-founded The Satanic Temple (TST) in 2013. Jarry is a pseudonym, and he refuses to be photographed.

The temple houses an art gallery in honor of Baphomet, a “sabbatic goat” representing the universe. Behind the two-story building, an eight-foot tall statue of Baphomet sits in a plain shed, where visitors can pay to view it.

With up to 50,000 members in chapters around the world, TST has garnered colossal media attention in the last three years. Chief among Jarry’s causes are marriage equality and women’s reproductive freedom. Any issue related to the government using religion to restrict individual freedom is also likely to engage temple leaders, some of whom staged a 2014 “Black Mass” at Harvard University to push the envelope on religious freedom.

Outside of New England, TST has taken legal action against the placement of edifices of the Ten Commandments in civic settings, including statehouses. To illustrate how such displays violate religious freedom, the temple has insisted it be allowed to erect goat-headed Baphomet statues in the same locations. TST is also planning to take on some schools’ use of isolation, denial of bathroom access, and corporal punishment of children.

For the 49-year-old Jarry, there is not much conflict between being Jewish and a Satanist. As a matter of fact, the two identities have come to inform each other, he said.

“I see it like Buddhism,” said Jarry. “Satanism is something that can co-exist with being a Jew,” he said.

In addition to Jarry’s belief that Judaism and Satanism can co-exist, there are parallels with how Judaism and Satanism have been branded by their detractors, he said.

“The false accusations that have been thrown at Jews historically are similar to what some people say about Satanism,” said Jarry, mentioning accusations of blood libel and — more recently — fabricated allegations that Israel perpetrates genocide against Palestinian children.

Alon Alexander, Oren Alexander, and Tal Alexander

Alexander brothers held without bail after first court appearance in sex crimes case

Brothers Oren and Alon Alexander will be held without bond on state charges ahead of their sex crimes trial, at least for now, a Florida judge ruled Thursday.

A division judge will make the final ruling on Friday.

Brothers Oren and Alon Alexander, both 37, and Tal Alexander, 38, were arrested on Wednesday in Miami on federal sex trafficking charges, according to an indictment from prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. For well over a decade, the prominent real estate brothers conspired to "repeatedly and violently drug, sexually assault and rape dozens of women," according to the federal indictment unsealed Wednesday in New York.

Oren and Alon, who are twins, were also arrested on state charges, including sexual battery, for which they made their appearances Thursday. Ohad Fisherman, a relative and also a real estate broker, is also charged in Florida but remains at large, state prosecutors said Wednesday.

During Thursday's hearing, Oren Alexander said his wife was nine months pregnant, and requested permission to attend her labor. He was denied the request Thursday, with the judge citing his status as a flight risk and access to transportation, but the division judge will make a final ruling.

The third brother, Tal Alexander, appeared in front of a federal judge on Wednesday, but is awaiting a removal hearing on Friday to determine if he is sent to New York. He is only facing federal charges.

Oren and Alon Alexander were also ordered Thursday not to have contact with any of their alleged victims.

Oren and Alon Alexander, who are being represented individually by different lawyers, released statements denouncing the charges.

"My client will be entering a plea of not guilty and addressing these charges in the appropriate forum…the Courtroom," Isabelle Kirshner, an attorney representing Alon Alexander, said in a statement to ABC News.

Oren Alexander's lawyer said in a statement to ABC News, "Oren Alexander is innocent. The evidence will show that neither he nor his brothers ever committed a crime."

There was no comment from Tal Alexander's attorney.

The alleged "long-running sex trafficking scheme" began in 2010 and relied on "deception, fraud and coercion," with the brothers inducing women to attend parties, events and trips where they were then attacked, federal prosecutors said in regards to the charges out of New York.

The brothers allegedly shared photographs of women to make sure they were "sufficiently attractive," federal prosecutors said. The brothers used dating apps or social media to contact them or used party planners as intermediaries, according to the federal indictment.

The Alexanders also provided drugs and would sometimes spike women's drinks, the federal indictment said.

During a press conference Wednesday, Florida State Attorney Katherine Rundle described the basis for the state charges, including one incident in which Fisherman allegedly held down an unnamed woman while Oren and Alon allegedly raped her in a locked room.

Tal and Oren Alexander began their careers at Douglas Elliman, focusing on the real estate market in New York and Miami. They left and launched their own firm, Official, in 2022. Alon Alexander is a president at Kent Security Services, the family's private security firm.

For thousands of years, people of the Far East have been looking into each other's eyes for signs of this dreaded condition. Any sign of sanpaku meant that a man's entire system — physical, physiological and spiritual — was out of balance. He had committed sins against the order of the universe and he was therefore sick, unhappy, insane, what the West has come to call "accident prone". The condition of sanpaku is a warning, a sign from nature, that one's life is threatened by an early and tragic end.
